Safari cannot connect to server

join the club of unhappy safari users here. I cant access any secure server sites such as my bank or even these forums on the apple website of all places. I have only suffered like this since upgrading a week or two ago, i am not sure how to roll back the changes or if there will be a fix soon. what i can tell you is that every other browser you download and use should do the trick for you until apple and safari get it sorted out.

Tell them to use another browser other than IE! 😉

I guess to have tried flushing caches, removal of plists etc.

Have you considered it might be a FW issue where the FW has been instructed not to let Safari access the internet? Apps such as LittleSnitch or NetBarrier?

I'm having the same problem.

I'm in the process of getting DSL from Qwest. That hasn't been going so good (Qwest Mac support su*ks BTW. If I had a choice I wouldn't be going with them) so today I switched back to my old dial-up ISP so I could at least check my Mail, get the forecast etc. The minute I opened Safari I got the "Safari can't open the page because it could not connect to the server" error message. Firefox can connect just fine but its as if Safari can't see that I've got a connection to the internet at all. I flushed, reset, deleted plist, everything that I can think of.

Help?

This is odd...... When I choose to "Report Bug To Apple" under the Safari menu, the page address is:

file://localhost/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/

What's up with that?

No one has any ideas on this? I'm desperate to go back to Safari.

Do you have Qwest DNS servers entered in the Network preferences? This page explains what to do if you don't:

Same problem here.
It started when I was unexpectedly disconnected from my new dsl connection.
I can't use Explorer either!

Thanks iBod but that didn't help. I thought you were onto something and I erased the DNS server addresses from the Network preferences but no luck.

The weird thing is that I now think Safari knows theres an Internet connection. It's just ignoring it for some reason. My dial-up connection sometimes drops off and Internet Connect just hangs up. I didn't notice this (I was browsing with FireFox) and I'd just deleted the DNS addresses so I fired up Safari. It told me that it couldn't connect because there was no connection to the Internet, and gave me a button to check network diagnostics. I thought woo hoo! It's fixed! After I reconnect my dial up connection, however, I still get the same "Can't connect to the server" error message. UGH!

This is really starting to p * me off!

Well I never did get Safari to work again with my dial-up, but I've finally got my Qwest DSL working so no worries. I'd still like to know why Safari was doing that and how to fix it.

BTW, Qwest tech support for Mac truly su*ks. No big surprise, just thought I'd let you all know.

This happened to me when I went from Dial-up to DSL with Earthlink. I tried everything for 3 days, went crazy, then called their 888 number, asked for a Mac person and she gave me two addresses for the DNS field in Network Preferences and it worked! She said that there were some corrupt files on their end ( true or not, don't know) but it resolved the problem.
So it may be the provider...

Does Safari only work with broadband?

I was having the same problem. It just started one day and I tried everything -- trashing files, resetting, emptying cache, reinstalling, etc. All to no avail. Then I started reading these forums and something clicked when someone mentioned they were using Earthlink and had to reset their DNS numbers. It reminded me that i had switched dial-up access numbers trying to get a faster connection. So, I just chose a different dialup number and it's working again!

I doubt this answer would work for everyone with this problem, but thought I might mention it incase it helped someone else.

Earthlink needs DNS Server #s even thought they claim them " optional " when i did not have values in there, web-sites just loaded forever to no where.True for dial-up & for DSL i knew from dial-up, also Earthlinks Scamblocker (i believe it is called) will check the Web proxy settings in Proxies on with a message that "another Application" Has changed the settings,brfore you close the preferences & i got to go no where. Scamblocker should be disabled unless it is improved from how it was the earlier part of the year.

Nothing more fun that downloading 47mbs for 6 hrs on dial-up & be dropped constanly for changed or incomplete or missing # web configurations.

I am having the exact same problem. It does not happen with every Apple Support/Discussion links but with many, especially those to submit a new topic!
To help increasing the confusion: Using IE I was able to post the question!

Hi Eme,

EL has a recent upgrade on TA. I tried it for a day or two and do not recall any problems. None the less I leave Total Access off. Check my posts or run a search on Total Access.
