Creating a double page spread - gutter accommodation??
If I split an image across two full bleed pages in an iPhoto book does the software automatically work out the overlap in the gutter or should I put that in manually when I lay out the images? Ie should I line up the images perfectly across the gutter as they appear in iPhoto (that is as the image crosses the binding) or should I add some overlap visually?
the program does not totally figure the gutter out - both pages are printed full bleed on 8. x 11 - I measure roughly 10 11/17 to 10 3/4 printed area showing (so about 1/4 to 3/16 gutter)
Unless you are really picky or have the most important person in your photo in the gutter I would just ignor it - I have even taken two photos and not bothered to use PhotoShop Elements to stitch them but just placed them on facing pages and I've been very happy with the results - your eye dos an amazing job of adjusting
The problem with adding visual overlap is going to be that the binding process and printing process are not perfect so you can not exactly predict the gutter will be - but I'd start with 1/4" if I were going to do it
measuring a few in my books I'd stick with my 1/4 inch suggestion - and I think that when you receive the book you will be happy with the results (actually i suspect that you would be happy if you ignore the gutter even though you certainly would be able to prove that it is there and see it if you look closely)
In looking through the book I find double page spreads very impressive even thought the gutter is not perfect on mine
Thanks again Larry. I'm testing using an Apple book for my portfolios to show clients, single image on a DPS full bleed is nice, I'm hoping it'll look impressive. I'm trying to keep some details out of the gutter area but on a couple of images its unavoidable. Thanks for measuring.
