the space bar and recording issue

I basically just want the space bar to stop all recording.

Here's the problem: I arm a track, use the mouse to hit the record button on the transport bar. Logic begins recording. I hit the space bar, Logic stops recording. BUT, say that I then hit the record button on the transport again - Logic begins to record - but NOW, hitting the space bar will NOT stop Logic recording. I have to move the mouse to the arrange window and click it, and only then will the space bar stop Logic.

I know this is only a small step, but it is absolutely aggravating. Programs like garageband - the space bar stops everything, no matter what. Is there a reason, or a workaround, or is it something stupid I'm doing?

Thanks...

I should have specified:

This situation occurs after I have stopped recording and deleted the previous audio track from the disk -- I hit OK (enter), when the delete dialog comes up, and then, once I resume recording, the space bar is deactivated (or the window, I assume, is deselected somehow) requiring me to click on the window so i can terminate the recording.

Sorry for the omission...

Interesting. I've found the same thing for years, & have always assumed that either I just didn't understand the Key Command significance, or that there was a glitch that stopped Logic interpreting the Space Bar command under certain circumstances.

Logic is so context-dependant that it is hard to tell when something is or isn't going to happen when you perform a certain action. A little more definitive causality wouldn't come amiss, IMHO…

Note that the Stop command & the command activated by default by hitting the Space Bar are in fact slightly different (see below).

Anyhow… try this for a long-shot:

_Space bar acts as Sustain Pedal_
Should you wish to use the Space Bar key command (usually Start/Stop), rather than as the Sustain function for the Caps Lock Keyboard (when active), you can disable the +Space bar acts as Sustain Pedal+ option.

You can also look here for unusual occurrences:

_Key Commands Window_
The Key Commands window can be opened by selecting +Preferences > Key Commands.+

_Now for the nitty-gritty:_

The +Stop Goto Left Locatorkey+ command stops playback, and moves the SPL to the left
locator position.

The +Stop Goto Last Play Position+ key command stops playback, and moves the SPL to the last position reached with a positioning command, or direct positioning of the SPL, using the mouse or Bar Ruler. _+The default for this command is the space bar.+_

See? So if that command was inappropriate (e.g. due to Song Position confusion), the Space Bar wouldn't have the expected effect…

So... and I'm a little confused here... but the general gist of what you're saying is that, possibly, the reason that Logic ignores the space bar-as-stop command (the second time through, after I've deleted a track, and started to record once again) is that Logic is interpreting an input from the space bar at this point as something OTHER than stop (recording) in this case?

Sigh. I totally understand that Logic isn't - and shouldn't be - garageband, but sometimes, it seems like things are so overcomplicated with Logic...

Yes. 7 is too complicated, largely for historical reasons. Apple's ideas on user interface are different from eMagic's, but they inherited their functions. I don't know if 8 is better…

However, the point here is that the Space Bar is not the Key Command for "Stop"; the fact that sometimes it has the effect of stopping is simply due to the overlap of functions.
