Hi all. I'm a brand new MAC user (having been convinced to make the switch from PC) and have spent the first 48 hours with my new toy surfing these discussion threads for help. I get on line using a USB wireless stick and connect through the network tab in System Preferences. Is there a shortcut I can use to get me directly to this network tab rather than going to the Dock, then System Preferences then network, then selecting the appropriate ISP and hitting connect? Thanks in advance for helpful answers!
yes, you can create a keyboard shortcut for this. In general you can create a keyboard shortcut to any menu item and as was pointed out by den.thed you can get to network preferences from apple menu->location->network preferences.
to make a keyboard shortcut to this menu item go to system preferences->keyboard&mouse->keyboard shortcuts. add a new shortcut for "All Applications. For the name of the menu item enter "Network preferences..." (do not enter quotes).
Look up on the right side of the Menu bar, click on the icon that looks like two arrows with three dots in between them <-> then click on a saved connection or Open the Network Preferences.
Or you can also go up to and click on the Apple and then park the mouse pointer over Location, from there you should also be able to select your saved connection and the Network Preferences.
Thanks Den for such a quick post in response to my dull qu. I'm particularly thick with getting used to my Mac and I cannot for the life of me find any such icon on the right side of the menu bar. And I couldn't work out what you meant with clicking on Apple and parking the mouse pointer over Location. (Even the very helpful Mac 101 was not basic enough for me!) However, I found that by ticking 'show modem status in menu bar' this created a telephone like icon which I can use quickly to connect and disconnect to the internet (without the more laborious route of going through Systems Preferences). Or maybe this is what you were referring to?
