What I don't get is there are lots of people that have this failure but are covered by the warranty, then there are another whole bunch that have the exact same problem but it's not covered by the warranty.

This is from the transcript:
Jay: Inform clients that GPU(NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor) is not causing the issue, other component of the logic board is causing the issue

So there are a whole bunch of us with some "other" component that has failed.
Why is this other component also not covered by extended warranty?

All I know is this "other" component failed after the SMC 1.3 update and my machine over heated because it did not shutdown on closing the lid.

Is the SMC update provided with an AS-IS and no liability claim?

You are find out slowly that the new macs are not like the old macs. I would maybe suggest you get yourself a powerbook, as it will outlast any of the new ones. Every version of the Macbook Pro has a percentage, I don't know what it is, of logic board failures. It just so happens that unless there is enough people with the problem nothing will happen.

I just had my logic board (and battery - but that is a different issue) replaced at an Authorized Service Center for Mac- since he closest Mac store is 3 hours away. Luckily I was covered under Apple Care (thank goodness I opted to buy the two extra years). I did NOT have to pay anything for the diagnostic because it was all covered under Apple Care. I tried to get them to tell me whether I would have been covered under the NVIDIA card problem but they would not give me a straight answer.
I am REALLY disappointed to read that a number of people have had the SAME PROBLEM come back - even with the new logic board etc. That seems ridiculous. THey are responsible to REPAIR the problem- not postpone it until you are out of warranty. Besides which such major problems on 2 year old computers seems absurd. What can we do to get Apples attention on this??

I'm assuming you already know this but just in case...

Any repairs are covered under a 90 day warranty (if your original warranty is up). If its been over 90 days... 😟

I have an early MacBook Pro 17, bought in New Zealand at the end of 2006.

This machine was having video problems (freezes, blue one-line pixels over the screen, flickering on-off effects and so) and now it is absolutely unusable: squares of noise in the spinning wheel screen and then just white noise. No video signal to an external monitor either.

Technicians in Argentina are telling me that the Logic Board replacement is so expensive here that nobody is actually doing it.

My June 2007 2.2GHz MBP had vertical line problems when hot last week, I called Apple, they said it was the nVidia problem. I took it to the nearest service provider - 50 miles away. They tested it, said they couldn't find a problem. I left it with them and after several days they said it wasn't the nVidia but the logic board - a repair cost of £760 ($1300 USD)!

Now I have an aluminium brick - I didn't get the AppleCare so that's it basically, any potential buyers, you have been warned!

Same problem here. A 1.83CD MacBook Pro w display issues upon startup, then freezes. Genius Bar wants a flat $300 to fix it. Had a friend take a look at it, and there seems to be a burned out component (it has a slight burnt smell). Same problem on DVI output as well.

Problem is, that particular component is not labeled (C1, F2, R3, etc.), so he cannot replace it. Unfortunately, he didn't take a pic of it either. Anyone have an idea of what this chip could be? If I had 300 bones to throw at this, I would...
😟

i had the same problem wherein there is no display at startup and no chime is heard.even my trouble started when i upgraded to os 10.5.8. I know that my logic board is not faulty as it starts when i hit the startup button some 50 times on and off, but the apple authorized dealer says that my logic board has problem and is charging me a bomb. dont know how to convince him as he thinks he is the god of MBP and knows all.
After keeping my MBP for a week at apple authorized dealer he gives me an answer that he has still not able to complet the diagnostics and does not revel what diagnostic is he running.
I WILL HAVE TO GIVE SOME HARD EVIDENCE THAT MY LOGIC BOARD IS NOT A PROBLEM.

I have the same problem with my macbook pro 2.4 (SR). The computer "died" (doesn't boot/no chime/black screen) after displaying strange artifacts in the screen for a few days.

One of Apple's authorized service centers in Madrid told me that, since they couldn't run the diagnostics software for the nvidia extended warranty, they couldn't change the logic board without charge (about 1200 euros).

My macbook pro is 2 years a 3 weeks old and here in Europe we have 2 years of warranty (as defined by the European Union)... so it seems I'm out of luck... will have to contact consumer groups in the area and see what I can do.

So here I have another 2200 euros brick.

True my friend... its a hole the the pocket. and that is not even our fault. We purchase a Mac thinking that we will get a hand on some good piece of technology, but no....it is totally unreliable. May be this is the reason why most of the time they press us to purchase an Apple Care Protection plan.

Well i dont know about you but i am a student and cannot afford this huge expense, moreover i can add in little bit and buy another laptop. Who knows today the logic board has gone tomorrow hard disc or something else can blow. H*ll with Mac, i am back to Windows now.

*Another word of caution, as your mac is 2 years old you might have to change the battery as well. Even my battery has died, works only 30 min in full charge. Check your battery health by putting it in another macbook pro. If it is below 60%, you might have to add more money for that as well.*

Best of Luck...

4 days ago my MBP failed to start up. The little white light would go on but there would be nothing in the screen. I tried turning it off and then back off several times but I never got it to start.

Today I went to the Apple Store and they told me I had to get the logic board replaced. I've only had thhis computer for 1 year and 9 months and I find this extremely ridiculous. I am not willing to pay 300 dlls for something that should not happen in the first place, especially on a computer that is relatively new.

I bought a MAC thinking that it would be an investement and last me for at least 5 years. I am never buying an apple product again.

This is weird. First i thought only NVIDIA geforce 8600m gt had a problem. But now it looks as if the Logic board also is malfunctioning in this particular late 2007 models.
Even i feel ridiculous to pay such a huge amount.
I will fight till the end. Tring to find a top official at LinkedIn.com so that i can bring this to their attention.
