MBP Logic board failure

Hi, I am so frustrated! I have a MacBook Pro and it doesnt open anymore. Yesterday, I went to Apple Store Genius Bar and I was told" Sorry nothing to do. You need to change the Logic Board!" WHAT!!! I paid 4 years of insurance..and now that my computer is 4 years and a few months...nothing to do! This is unfair because it is a manufacture problem...

Apple should take care of their good customers!!! I paid Apple CARE 4 years FOR WHAT!!!!! This is terrible... I need help!!! This is terrible!!! 😟

Zalia - when you say "doesn't open," what do you mean? My 2007 MBP would start up and I would hear the chime, but my display was dark. Apple replaced my video card for free after the technician found that it was the faulty NVIDIA card. However, it wasn't until months after the original problem, several trips to the genius bar and certified apple repair shops, several angry calls to customer service, and my insistence based on the apple support article that I cited to the technician. This was almost 3 years ago and I haven't had a video card issue since.

To others with this problem - I have a 2007 MBP. I had video card/display and battery issues starting in mid-2009. By early 2010 I had a new video card and replacement battery. As of about 2 months ago, my new battery refuses to hold a charge and my BIOS battery has died. Every time I unplug my computer, it resets itself to December 31, 2000. I cannot disconnect the computer from my AC cord without risking this reset. Is this a documented problem with the NVIDIA logic board? Can anyone help me find documentation so I can possibly get it fixed? Thank you!

The Bios battery is completely separate, and it happens eventually with all electronic devices which rely on a battery somewhere. I have this with my year 2K Titanium powerbook - I just replaced the removable battery with a cheap japanese copy and since this maintains power, I haven't bothered to replace the Bios battery, but I know theyre available online and it's possible to replace them with a little light solering. Sorry - didn't see your reply - there's no way of knowing what you've got in there now, I'm afraid - only a 'genius' could tell you, but they can't open MBPs themselves despite their genius status. The only other people who could tell you would be non-apple technicians and then Apple wouldn'y be interested bevause non-magic non-Apple hands had opened the case. Catch 22 again for you i'm afraid. My MBP is now on a cooling stand permenantly.

mary0maru7 - Well, my 2009 MBP will start up, then the display get dark, and I receive a message inside a black rectangle to restart my computer... I am sure the problem NVIDIA card. But the Genius Bar said: Nothing to do... it is the logic board... My computer is only 4 years old and 2 months... I paid for the insurance... 4 years.. the Apple care is over.. What should I do? Snif snif.

Hi Dr. Jezz, my MBP is 2008... Sorry for the confusion, I wrote 2009! .. 4 years and a few months = before September 2008.

What should I do with my Laptop now?

Dr.Jezz, my problem is :

" If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within four years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty. " I paid 4 years of Apple Care.... and now it is died!!!! and out of Apple warranty for their mistake!!!! I am really upset!

Mine too was out of warranty and out of the 4 year window by 3 months. After debating back and forth I decided to just pay Apple to fix it. I did the $310 flat rate repair and they shipped it out. Was supposed to be 7-10 days and I got it back in 3. I am happy to have it back but also dissapointed this problem happened in the first place. Hopefully if anything goes wrong with the new logic board it happens in the next 90 days, that's all they give you for the warranty on the service. I'll reply at a later date with how the computer is doing. So far so good, but I fired it back up an hour ago.

rjluna84, 90 days or 3 months is abut the lifetime of a re-baked or re-flowed logic board that has died (when I re-baked mine it lasted for 5 months before I re-baked it again). It is the same length of "guarantee" that repair shops give who simply re-flow a dead logic board. I recommend you ask Apple exactly how they repaired your macbook pro. Did they re-flow your logic board or replace it with a "new" one, and if the latter then ask them "how new?" "when was the logic board manufactured?" "does it have the same weakness as my dead logic board?" "How do I know the same thing won't happen in 100 days or in another 4 years?" "If it dies will you replair it for free?"

Thanks for sharing your experience on the NVIDIA MBP issues you had. I too 4 days ago got the same problem on my 2007 MBP and was refused the free replacement of the board instead being told I'd have to pay 11825 Swedish Kronor to get it fixed, that's about 1800 US Dollars !!

I also would like to write to Cupertino but I don't know where and what department to address the letter. Could you please tell me where you sent yours.

Zaila, I feel for you. Mine went within the 4 years, and Apple still refused to fix it - in a very underhanded, bland corporate way. All we can do is tell people that Apple products are not of the quailty that their reputation was originally built upon. This thread atests how strong the feelings are, as does the other one and the over quarter million views. That dent in corporate credibility is nothing short of a PR disaster and shows week corporate governance.

Man ... check this out ... every response to this, or the other, thread seemse to be deleted now ... I've a ton of stuff in my inbox that 'Apple controll' denies links to ... we're not only being censored, but knowingly censored by the post-Jobbs idiot 1984 newspeak corporation that is Apple ... yeah go ahead .. and Bye Bye ... my adult life has been spent backing you guys, explainiing why you were the best - and you were - now corporate lackies, just look at what you're doing - and why ... seem to control the roost? Check out the responases to this and come clean and we might all get over it. Not O.K? Then, look over your shoulder for the next OS that people wish to support ... FACT 🙂
