"up to two machines per day he received within the last months."

I am not surprise by this I spoke to one other service provider, they said they have at least 2-3 macbook that the logic board need replacing.

However on the SL home front, I have also installed it on my daughter macbook pro 15" awhile back at least a week prior to mine. I am looking closely on this, so far the only things I have notice so far is the battery depletion and had to replace it and also the airport has weakened not receiving signal no further than 15'. The saga continues....

But in the good news, I received a call from Apple Care they will replace the logic board and I will pay for the labor. Thank you Apple I knew you would full through for me and thanks to this thread also (I emailed this thread to the person I was dealing with).

Again Thank you Apple and thank you guys.

The man at the Guernsey store told you wrong, little rabbit.

The extended repair program applies to the 2.2Ghz just as it does to MBPs of the same generation with faster processors.

Contact Apple Customer Relations and tell them about it, or go back to the store and request that the person you saw confirms his or her mistaken belief about this on the phone with head office while you wait.

I have had my own 2.2GHz logic board replaced under the program, and know of many others who have also.

Cheers

THanks for the update, benon.

I was actually a bit peeved after having recommended Next Byte to you that they hadn't initially come through after my own very positive experiences with them in Melbourne. Glad they did the right thing by you.

Yes, I'm not fond of glossy screens either. They look pretty, but they can be a proverbial pain in the retinas to work with!

Good to know you got it sorted in the end.

Don't forget to use that MBP a bit still or you'll kill the battery!

Cheers

I have the same problem, see my posts at [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2261542&tstart=0]
Apple says it is the logicboard, since their testing hd could not extract an errorcode out of the dead MBP, so it cannot be the nvidia chip. if it was, the book would still react somehow, at least bring up the startup chime. hm.

What I find puzzling; I let the MBP stay powered on this morning. Black display, no startupsound, no shiftlock light, the led at the front is on like in sleep mode, but not pulsating. so I let it stay this way and drained the battery. it took about 3 hours and the book got fairly warm to the touch. so something is still going on inside, or not?

at least the powermanager seems to work, I connected it to magsafe and it immediatly began to reload the battery, until the magsafe led went from orange to green after like two hours.

Tom,

as mentioned above in some cases it depends on how much effort the tech-guy at your Service-Provider takes besides the standard-procedure to get the code. In my case (exactly the same symptoms as you have with no startup-chime or boot) it turned out to be the nvidia issue as well.

So you may either insist and try another service-provider who will "fight" for you with AppleCare or - before putting your MPB to rest - you take your chance at a non-Apple-certified Place where they eventually heat up the logic-board in the oven (@ 80 C) to reconnect the bad junction.

Good Luck.

i let the mbp idle for some hours sitting on a cushion (normally no good idea, since it will heat up!), but that was what I wanted.

guess what? the fans started to work after a while. I don't know if the powermanagement and the thermal protection are part of a circuit that is so low-level that it will work even if the mainboard is dead - but to me it seems more and more unlikly that the mainboard is gone (what Apple claims). how very convenient for Apple that the bootsequence won't work and their "error code" cannot be extracted.

Kai, are you in Germany? Care to relay to me the contacts of your service provider? my mail is 'itsatom' and then the 'at' sign and finally 'gmx' dot 'net'.
thx

Wow. I just had a backcall from customer service. Apple will cover the repair of my 17" MBP, even though, from a technical point of view, it is not sure if the failure is caused by the Nvidia-problem, since the error-code could not be extracted. They are willing to make an exception to their strict rule because they had me running from one disappointing service-tech to another without result.
Now here's a happy user again. Even if it took time, nerves and persistance, I am pleased that Apple is willing to see the problem not only from it's technical side, but from the user-experience. Thank you.

Sounds exactly like my situation. My machine has been great! Bought it as a pre order when MBP first went intel. Four years with minimal problems. I did have to replace the keyboard because I spilled a jack and coke on it and I had to replace a hard drive three months ago. This graphics issue caught me off guard. Since I have never had any major issues (not caused by my drinking habits 🙂 ) with the computer I had no idea that this graphics issue was pretty common. Goodness look how long this thread is! Genius bar convinced me to go ahead a purchase a new MBP because of age of my machine. I still having a hard time letting go, I could use the machine in my wife's dental practice if replacing the logic board got me a couple more years. But $900.00 don't seem to make much sense. It just seems ashamed it has been so reliable up to now.

hehe spilling Jack and Coke on a keyboard isn't recommended, and neither is just straight Jack...apparently the computer doesn't drink. XD

I'm happy because my logic board has been replaced free of charge (after an argument with the person in-store and a chat with Apple about the validity of the help document about the issue. Apparently someone in the store is an idiot).

Just out of interest, how much heavy use was the graphics card under??? Mine was under a lot of work while I was using photoshop for my studies and it failed in under 2 and a half years.

Mar 21, 2010 6:51 PM in response to Petite Lapine

According to another of his posts, jedicpa actually has an earlier MBP , with the ATI Radeon GPU, rather than the NVidia one, Petite Lapin, so the causes probably aren't comparable.

Just by the way, my own failed after a very prolonged (many hours) session involving frequent minor screen redraws. Not very intensive, but extended. I get the impression, though, that the cause is really based on longer term use , and protracted heating and cooling cycles, weakening the bond of the GPU to the logicboard, rather than to any single "traumatic" event.

Ah...I see.

Yeah...mine was forced through many hours of Photoshop and iMovie for my Media Studies and Photography projects, both which I still use frequently. I was just wondering if it was prolonged use, or intensive use that truly did the damage and see if I could make it last longer this time around by moderating how much I did to actually stress it.

Strangely all I was doing at the time it actually failed was watching a video on 4OD (something that usually went by without my laptop warming up that much).
