Itunes intall stops at status 'Registering iTunes automation severer"

Using a HP G60 and Vista home premium OS I have uninstalled and try to reinstall iTunes 8 several times. The install almost finishes but stops at status: 'Registering iTunes automation sever' - I tried all of the General installation troubleshooting.

Any ideas on how to get a successful install?

First it does take awhile
second make sure you are running it in Administrator mode
and third make sure that you don't have a firewall or other internet security that is blocking it from contacting the Apple server

(I have often found that by setting the internet settings to Automatically Detect Settings, helps as well rather than having them manually set)
