alias, duplicate? Whats the difference?

What is the difference between and alias and a duplicate?

Macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

An alias is a pointer to another file (a directional sign telling how to get to it) not a copy - a duplicate is a copy and is totally separate from the original

A duplicate means you have two separate files that are the same an alias means you have one real file and another separate one that *just points to it*.
