How to remove item from menu bar
How to remove item from menu bar at top of screen.
Imac, Mac OS X (10.5.6)
Hold down the command key and drag the item off. POOF!

To add to what Király said I would also check your login items, and remove the ones you don't want. They way they don't readd themselves next time you turn on your Mac. You can find Your login items by going to System Preferences -> Accounts -> Select Your Account if not already selected -> and then the Login (Tabs)
