size/length limits for h.264

Hey there!

I'm trying to find out if there are file size/length limits for h.264/mp4 files. Such as, is the spec not rated for recordings longer than 3 hours? 4 hours? 8 hours? Is there a file size limit beyond disk format constraints? Is a 16GB mp4 file going to play anywhere, or even be properly recognized as a mp4 file?

I've seen many discussions as to using the format to compress DVDs for iPhones and such, but can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

The standard itself doesn't have these limitations, but each "device" may have it's own limitations that you need to be wary of. For example, I can encode an .mp4 video file that will play back fine on a Playstation 3, but, due to it's bitrate, will not play back on an iPod.

However, any app on a computer that is listed as being able to playback MPEG-4 content will recognize it as such and play it back.
