Printing a New York Times Article

I have been using this site for several years and now have subscribed
to "New York Times Select" to retain access to editorials, etc. The articles used to print out in a nicely sized font, perhaps a 14.

However, for the past several weeks the articles print out in a font
that is too small, maybe a 7. This now happens on both of my computers (iBook and iMac) both of which have different printers. Both machines are running OSX 10.4.2 and Safari 2.0.1 (412.5). The same problem occurs with Internet Explorer. Articles from WashintgonpPost.com, etc., print out in the larger font, as always. Apple Care spent some time looking into this issue and felt that the NYT could help, but they couldn't.

If anyone know why this happens or how to resolve it I would appreciate the help. Again, the problem does not appear to be computer, browser or printer specific.

Thanks,
Chris

Greetings Chris!

That's kind of strange. I'm a long time reader of the NYT on the web, but I haven't felt that I want to pay for Select just yet. Can you sign out of Select and if so, how do articles look when you print them then? Just to clarify, is it only the Select articles that are giving you the printing problem or are all the NYT articles causing trouble?

By the way, do you think Select is worth the money? Is there no other way to access those editorials? Which writers do you like to read on a regular basis?

Just as an aside, I frequently resort to various tricks when printing articles from web browsers. If the exact formatting and images are not really necessary, sometimes I will cut and paste into TextEdit and print from there. I know printing should work perfectly each and every time from the web browser but sometimes it's not worth the struggle. There's usually more than one way to skin a cat.

Regards,
Steve M.

Just going into "Discussions" to see if there was a clue to the small print from a NYT Select article - and finding that exact issue already addressed...
So, no help, unfortunately, only an addition confirming that the probelm is the same for A4 paper size, iMacG5 and Epson Stylus Color 740.
So the issue might lie at at NYT?
We shall see if someone else has a solution.
Cheers

No, Steve, I was referring to your post. I was just amazed that that exact problem was posted that same day...
Sorry for the confusion.
I have access to Virtual PC, so I tried the same article from TimeSelect in Windows/Explorer and here everthing was pringing in the correct font size.
I detected however that it is not only the TimeSelect articles that will print in miniscule fonts, also the "open" articles now print like this, at least under the "printer friendly" link. This is true both in Safari and Explorer for Mac.
This ought to eliminate both Safari and NYTimes as the culprit and possibly bring us to Tiger...

This is where I ran out of gas, too. The New York Times spent a good number of emails trying to resolve this issue, to no avail. Perhaps the problem started with an Apple software update, but why doesn't it affect other news carriers?

I'd appreciate continued help.

Also, I think Times Select is worth the cost not only for access to the restricted article, but also for the excellent access to the archives that is included. I really didn't continue to expect the Times for free indefinitely, anyway.
