Upgrading the RAM in a MBP 15" question

*I AM A COMPLETE NEWBIE*

I am the proud owner of a brand new MBP 15” unibody (I could only afford the 2GB of RAM version). I will be using this exclusively for LOGIC STUDIO. It’s running fine off of the 2GB of RAM, but I would very much like to upgrade it to its max of 4GB OF RAM.

My questions are:

Is there more than one slot for additional RAM?

If there is more than one slot, do I have to purchase a 2GB card to fill the empty slot to equal 4GB of RAM, or a 4GB of RAM card?

Can any of you post a link to where I can purchase the items?

Thank you!

There are two slots. You have a single 2 GB stick in the stock configuration. To increase to 4 GB total RAM, you'll need to purchase a single 2 GB 204-pin PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 MHz RAM stick. Installation instructions are here:

Buy from a reputable supplier (Crucial, Kingston, etc., but avoid the Kingston ValueRAM) who provides a lifetime guarantee on the RAM.

Here's A LINK to the appropriate RAM from Crucial.

Note that although the Apple-stated max for your system is 4 GB, it has been reported that 6 GB will work; for that, you'd need a single 4 GB stick, which costs considerably more than the 2 GB stick...

Since Apple's stated max is 4GB, would installing the 4GB to make 6GB create a problem, and would it void my warranty?

No. But, if you do need service, remove that 4 GB stick before taking it in.

Could you provide the link for the 4GB card?

I did - click on "4 GB stick" in the last line of my post above. I notice you stated, +"I could only afford the 2GB of RAM version."+ When I say considerably, I mean it! A single 2 GB stick is around $30. A single 4 GB stick is in the $350-500 range. I suspect you'll be going with 4 GB total...
