Macbook won't go to sleep automatically

My macbook won't go to sleep after the predetermined time in energy saver preference pane. I could manually make it sleep, and it does go to sleep by using the schedule, but it won't automatically sleep after several minutes of being idle (despite i set it to sleep after 1 minute of inactivity). Only the screen turn off.
This happens after I did an "archive&install". Apps that might affect are insomniaX and smartsleep.
Things that I've tried are : switch off bluetooth; disconnect all usb, ethernet etc; check console but it didn't give any error prior or after the "sleep" after 1 minute of being idle.

I always let my macbook run at night, but it happened that recently, for two nights in a row it didn't go to sleep (and even hibernation!), only to find that out in the morning that my mac was in "off" condition, which also means might affect my system file since it wasn't shut downed properly.
Help is very much appreciated

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. I reset the SMC and it does go to to sleep. But something bugging me, I set it to go to sleep after 1 minute of inactivity, but what happened was it switched of the screen after a minute, then it'll take few more minutes before it actually went to sleep. Is that normal (means it'll only count time of idle after the screen is switched off or something)?
Thank you again

HI,

*"but what happened was it switched of the screen after a minute, then it'll take few more minutes before it actually went to sleep. Is that normal (means it'll only count time of idle after the screen is switched off or something)?"*

Go to System Preferences/EnergySaver and click the Sleep tab. If your have your Sleep options for the hard disk to go to sleep at about the same time as the display (screen saver options)... possibly this is what you are seeing?????

It seems like the problem happens when playing music in iTunes. And what I meant earlier is that I set the computer to go to sleep after a minute (which also means that the display will automatically set to switch off after a minute), but what happened is: after a minute, display off, wait for another minute then the computer will to sleep. is that normal? and does everyone experienced that when itunes is playing, the computer won't sleep, or even hibernate when the power is low enough?
thanks

Hi sorry to reopen the thread but I do have 2 mac, MBP 2,4 mac osx.5.7 and an imac intel core duo 1,83 same os and both do not go automatically to sleep.
I read carefully this and other forum, tried everything but no success.
No device plugged, no weird activity on activity monitor, no print queues, on the imac I did also an archive and install but no automatic sleep mode.
Is there an issue with osx.5.7 known???
could you please advice?
many thanks
