No sound from a real instrument in GarageBand '09

Hi!
I used to have no problem plugging my guitar or electronic drum in my old eMac and select new track with MONITOR ON AND then I could hear myself play trough the Mac's speakers. Now with this new garage band, all i'm getting is lots of high pitch feedbacks!!! Please help! I feel like I've downgraded from the iLife 2005 Garage band i was using!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Are you getting feedback thru your mac's built in mic?

Go to Systems preference> sound>input to see if Internal Microphone is on.

THIS IS driving me nuts!
I chose Line In as my device for sound input, and I even whore headphones... I can
hear myself through my guitar's pickups! This sounds crazy, but it was so easy before: plug my guitar in the >0< input, put monitor on on my track and BINGO I could hear myself play, without having to wear headphones!!!

What am I still doing wrong?

On a intel mac you need to change input and output in Garageband > Preferences > Audio Midi. Start with that.
