Converting an MP3 to WAV --> How can I convert an MP3 to wav format, 16 bit

How can I convert an MP3 to wav format, 16 bit, 44,1 khz? I like the program Switch which I know can convert MP3s, but how to I set it up for the specific settings that I need?

Dual processor 2.5

You can do the conversion in Logic (just Export the file & select the format options you want), but of course having a WAV (or AIFF — essentially the same thing but compatible with older Audio CD players) will not improve the quality. Once a file is compressed — as all MP3s are — you cannot recover the lost information. I expect you knew that, but just in case…!

Any particular reason why you want it in AIFF (or WAV) format?

Just import into a logic session. Then bounce at the specs you require. Logic or Waveburner, iTunes and even Quicktime I think can each do this easily.

A question though. I am assuming you are converting an MP3 to 44.1/16 bit just so you can play the file in a consumer quality CD player?? IF so - that makes sense.

But if you are doing this because you think it will improve the sound quality of your MP3, I will save you some time here. It won't improve the sound quality at all. It will just turn the MP3 into a larger audio file.

44.1/16 bit resolution enables you to have a much better sounding file than MP3 formats, but not by going at it this way.

No offense to you if you know all of this already. I am assuming that you may not know this - because if you did you would also likely know how to convert an audio file.

Cheers

You can't choose the bits in Switch. However I doubt the mp3s you have are other than 16bit so you can safely choose 'encoder options', settings 'custom', format 'pcm', samplerate 44100Hz. After the conversion just launch the resulting file in quicktime then choose window menu and 'movie inspector'. it will be stated what bitrate is the file and for 99% it will be 16bit

Right, but when it's loaded into a program that doesn't directly deal with the mp3 format (there aren't many) isn't it converted into 16-bit, 44.1 PCM data?

I just saved a 48kHz, 24 bit file to mp3, then converted it to 22,050kHz, 16-bit and saved under a different name. Both files opened in Amadeus Pro (mac) and SoundForge (PC) as 16-bit, 44.1kHz.

It will convert to the session conditions. So if you have a ProTools session set to 24bit/96kHz/aiff then the mp3 will be converted to those values.
