random ding ding sound from my imac

hi all,

i bought my first mac on wednesday and have really good experience with it so far... i noticed that every now and then it makes a ding ding or dong dong sound... can anyone shed some light on this? it happens when i'm using it and it happens when i'm not using i.e. watching a dvd last night it did it twice. the only thing i have installed since purchase is mac office 08 and eyetv 3 software. thanks in advance.

iMac 2.66, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...

Go to System Preferences (Applications folder) and click Sound. Click the Sound Effects tab.

Deselect: Play user interface sound effects

and the next two boxes if necessary.

Also, open the Mail application. From the Menu Bar, click Mail/Preferences. Click the General tab.
Look for: New mail sound. Click the pop up menu to select a particular new Mail sound or no sound at all.

Hi Carolyn, thanks for your welcome and response. i'll check it out tonight when i get home... hope thats the problem. i pretty much installed mac office within a few hours of turning on the mac for the first time, so i couldn't isolate when the sound started... thanks.

it looks it has been entourage... every 10 mins it checks for emails.. i think when nothing comes through it does 2 dings (or dongs) and when an email comes through it ding/dong once. thanks for your inputs... i have sat here monitoring the next scheduled "send & receive" info on the bottom right corner of entourage for the past 40 mins...

Does anyone know how to convert pst file in outlook (PC) to a file format that entourage can import? thanks.

To get rid of any sounds related to Entourage, go to to Entourage Preferences. In General Preferences, click on ”Notification”. Under “Sounds”, uncheck “No mail sound”. You won't hear any sounds when Entourage periodically checks for e-mail via "Send and Receive". If you don’t want to hear sound when you receive new mail, also uncheck “New mail sound”. If you like, you can also get rid of the Welcome, Sent mail, Mail error, and Reminder sounds by unchecking their respective boxes.

The only sounds I leave on are for Welcome and Sent mail because they actually seem kind of pleasant. 🙂 Also, these two sounds appear only when I do something to activate them. I hear no sound every time Entourage checks for e-mail. That can become very annoying--as you've found out.

I had the same ding ding ding sound.
Did what you said and it still dings.
Is it maybe possible that it is a keyboard problem?
Since I got back from holiday the 4/dollar sign button does not work.
When the ding ding started I pulled out the keyboard and sound stopped.
So have to try with another keyboard what happens...

Also check your Dashboard. You may have set up some widgets that make noise, such as a timer or alarm clock, when you were playing with it and then forgotten about them.
