Turning Off Auto-arrange on the Desktop

I hope this is in the right forum.

Hello, I'm in need of some help here. I've been having some problems with my desktop icons. The setting for my icons got switched to auto arrange and I don't like it. I've searched around quite a bit, but I can't figure out how to make it so I can place icons freely around my desktop.

It's a minor problem, I know, but it's bugging me.

Click on the desktop and from the View menu select Show View Options. Pull down the menu next to Arrange by: and select None.

Neither reply said to control-click on the desktop, but if you want to do it that way, select “Show View Options” from the pop-up menu. In the resulting window next to Arrange by:, select “None.”

Thanks guys, but the problem remains. Whenever I control-click anywhere on the desktop, the only option it gives me regarding icons is "Keep Arranged By" and it gives me a list of options. None of the options are "none" or anything like that.

Hello Zach:

Right-click on the desktop. From the drop down menu select +"show view options."+ Click on +"arrange by."+ As VK said, one of those should be "none." If that is not the case, post back - there is another kind of problem.

click anywhere on the desktop and go to view menu->view options. change the arrangement to "arrange by none".
