Some follow up - A posting at Macfixit confirms the problem. Expedia's reply is basically to blame Apple and ask us to use IE or Netscape. Here is their reply for interest. Cooky enabling or not makes no difference contrary to a statement below and we know that Expedia does not work well with Safari in various incarnations. Consider using Travelocity, Hotwire, Orbitz or the airline sites which do work seemlessly!

I have the same problem (cannot use the text links in the yellow bar in Expedia's home page). I have tried this on OS 10.4.2 with Safari2.0 (412.2.2) and with 10.3.9 and Safari 1.3. The pages open with Netscape 7, Explorer and Opera, but not when I use the debug menu to change the user agent to something else.
Curiously, if I go the Expedia home page and use Safari to increase the text size until the text is outside the yellow box, then I can sometimes get the links to work.
This is not the case with other websites that use links that are on colored bars, eg Maxfixit.com or Travelocity. In fact all the other links on expedia worrk, so long as they are not on that yellow box!
There was a posting at Macfixit.com for a similar problem at another site, that the developer fixed by changing his HTML or Java place setting parameters.
Sounds like a problem with the programing of Expedia's site and /or Safari.
Things that don't work - resetting Safari, clearing caches, fixing permissions, running cron scripts, checking permissions, checking the disk with fsck -y, and rotating/deleting swap files and various system/user caches.
It is irritating to have to have keep Explorer, Netscape or Firefox as back up browsers for such problems.
