GarageBand does not recognize my electric guitar

I read through the other posts, but am still having a problem.

I am trying to connect my electric guitar using the audio-in in the back of my imac. I am not using any devices between my guitar and computer, and instead am trying to connect using a 1/4" Stereo Female to 1/8" Stereo Male plug adapter. I have also changed my GB Preference to Audio-In under the "Audio Midi" section. When I try to choose an amp and edit, the only input source options I get are "Mono 1 and 2(Built in mic), along with Stereo(Built in mic).

Obviously I'm doing something wrong. Not looking for professional sound, just more than the built in mic sound. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the response.

Unfortunately, prior to posting the message, I had done what was listed in the GBFAQ. I had changed the settings in Garage Band as listed, then I opened up a new track. When my guitar is plugged in, the GB input source still only listed the built-in mic options.

Am I doing something else wrong?

And you're sure you're setting your Input in GB's Prefs to Built-in Input, because that would not give the built-in mic as an option in the Track Info Pane.

(Just a stab in the dark, I see you changed your OS info from 10.5.6 down to 10.4.8. Is that accurate? Because GB '08 and up has been incompatible with anything under 10.5).

Make sure in SYSTEM PREFERENCES that "LINE IN" is selected too - I recorded for a long time with the same cheap adapter but I thought mine was a MONO to STEREO adapter (Radio Shack Cheapie) - not sure if that makes a difference also make sure it's plugged in tight - I had to really push hard to get it to "seat" in... I use an Interface now but mine worked fine once I set up "line in" in SYS PREF... Mine is a PPC Imac - yours might be an Intel but I think the same system preference option is still there.
