Unix File System in Disk Utility

What format does the option "Unix File System" in Disk Utility use? I have a new 1 TB external drive on the way and I need the drive to be RW by both OS X.4.11+ and Ubuntu Linux.

FAT32 is obviously out as I need/want 1 large drive. Not to mention it's wasteful. So what would be the best format to use? Is the "Unix File System" option ext2, ext 3 or ?

Will there be any issues formatting my drive as this "Unix File System" and using it to house my iTunes library?

TIA for any info.

iMac G5 (iSight) / iBook G4 12", Mac OS X (10.4.11), 160GB, 1.5GB, DL Superdrive / 40GB, 1GB, Combodrive
