85W MagSafe power adapter dead after chewed on by baby?
I have a bit of an odd issue. My 9 month old daughter got a hold of the MagSafe end of my 85W power adapter and was chewing on it. I quickly got it away from her, but not before she had slobbered all over the end. It was plugged in at the time. Now when I plug it into my MacBook Pro, the LED on the MagSafe end does not light up (it's actually lit up VERY dimly, green), and my battery indicator on my menu bar says Not Charging. Anyone dealt with this problem before (not necessarily with baby slobber, but with other liquids)? Is my power adapter dead? I'm surprised that a bit of liquid on the end could cause so many problems. Any thoughts?
I wonder if there is still some moisture or most debris still in the plug. Is there visible physical damage to the pins? I'd make sure the pins are really clean and dry.
Try to keep the power adapter and any cables going into the computer away from the kid. If that can't be done, don't use the computer in their presence and take it to a WiFi hotspot until they can learn to control their curiousity.
Make sure the 4 pins are still able to move (they are spring loaded) and just leave the power adapter someplace warm for a few days. Just give the magsafe some time for the moisture to evaporate and it should be fine. I have seen magsafes that were dropped into puddles work, but only after a good bit of time someplace warm.
My MagSafe randomly decided to show the effects yours is. Though mine was not slobbered/chewed on and I don't remember it coming in contact with water in the 35 minutes since it was working fine. I know power is going through it because it will power the notebook without the battery (I only removed it to see if any power was being transferred) but it shows the "(Not Charging)" status when the battery is installed.
It's less than a month old and I'm really getting irritated since this is the third power adapter I've had for my MacBook Pro.
I guess I'll let it sit out overnight to...dry or something. I'll just use my older power adapter that is wearing out in the mean time since it still works.
