BCA problems "You cannot partition an external disk drive"

Greetings!

Boot Camp has worked fine for me before, but after last nights clean re-install of my Mac Pro it won't seem to work.
Once I run the Boot Camp Assistant and click the first continue, I get the following error:
*You cannot partition an external disk drive.*
*Restart your computer using your computer's internal startup disk.*
The strange thing being that I only have internal disks, and not even any external disks connected at the time.

I have two 500GB drives in a striped RAID0, and the 250GB drive that came with the Mac Pro that I planned to use as a Windows drive.
All the drives are showing as +"Connection Type: Internal"+ and +"Partition Map Scheme: GUID Partition Table"+ in the Disk Utility.
I have searched for answers on the net, but haven't found anything useful.
There was a guy back in Jan '08 with the same setup and problem ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1328805), and the only "solution" he came up with was to disband the RAID and work from there, something I don't want to do.

It would be reasonable to think that I could run a RAID and at the same time use Boot Camp to install Windows on a 3rd drive.
This problem seems to have existed for over a year without any real fixes from Apple, so if someone could provide help in how to do it, or perhaps some sort of workaround, I would be eternally thankful.
Thank you in advance! 🙂

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Boot Camp Assistant was not designed or built with Mac Pro in mind. You can't use it if you have the Apple Pro RAID card.

It is not really needed except for XP versions.

Format the 250 as Master Boot Record, create one or two FAT/MSDOS partitions and then pull your other drives - to be safe.

Having a stripe RAID isn't a problem either.

Thank you for the speedy answer!

What do you mean with "it is not really needed except for XP versions"?
Windows XP? I was thinking of installing Windows 7 RC...

Formating it as a Master Boot Record in FAT, will this cause any later problems, or will boot order etc still be managed the same way?
Will I later be able to format the Windows partition as NTFS, as FAT is a pretty out of date file format?

I really hope this will be fixed in the new Boot Camp version coming with Snow Leopard.
Thank you once again for your answer hatter. 🙂

There isn't any need to do anything other than boot from Wndows 7 RC DVD and format your drive. Zero. Zilch.

Boot Camp Assistant will format your alternate drive as MBR anyway.

And yes you will need to delete and create NTFS volume(s).

But pull your other drives.

Try it. And look at other threads of Mac Pro users installing Vista / Windows 7.

If you feel you have to do it the Boot Camp way, install a small OS X partition and pull your other drives and boot off that.

Use some imagination.

I meant that you are looking for an Apple method when you just need to treat installing Windows 7 as if it was a PC.

Read this thread on MacRumors if you haven't already

Including WHAT Mac Pro (2008, 3,1, something) also helps.

There is always someone there to ruin a party and spill milk that it doesn't work for various reasons.

About the only thing might be Windows not showing in OS X's Startup Disk; that Boot Camp isn't supported yet on Windows 7 - Apple's Setup.exe so you need to install drivers separately.

But for an RC and Beta this has been a really good build.

If you are new to Windows, it might seem uphill or steep learning curve is about all.

And it sounds like it is best anyway to strip all the partitions on the drive and let Windows do any formatting.

Paragon Software has a new partition manager $79 that is suppose to support Windows 7 on Mac. Even an installer wizard. They make CampTune and NTFS driver already.
