New Apple Remote for iMac

Can anyone tell me if I can get the new Remote with Front Row to work with my new iMac G5 2.0ghz that I got just weeks before the Newer iMac with it built in? I see I can buy it, but will it work?

Historically speaking, I think there has always been some issue with IR readers on OS X...

that being said, isn't this part of the marketing of the mini? DIV out... small factor...
I want to put a mini at each of my HD TVs and use FrontRow... but I cannot find anything about computability with anything other than the iMac... Doesn't make sense.

Of course they do, but you get at least some kind of pre-warning / advanced notice from them when they have plans or when they are upgrading their PC's/Server technology.

Seeing as I only bought the fecking thing 3 weeks ago !

Same with Car manufacturers, you get advanced notice of what models will be available and when new versions are due. 😉

cheers

Well it was two or three weeks ago that Apple announced this special event, and Mac news sites as well as the mainstream press published articles speculating on new Mac models as well as new iPods. There are also a number of buyer's guides out there that you can use to time your purchase. The one I use is here. A buyer's guide will tell you when new models are likely. The last time the iMac was updated was in May, and that buyer's guide shows that iMac models are generally updated on a 6-month or so cycle (though recently it's been longer), so one would have expected a new iMac revision soon.

I had checked that site before buying and it showed nothing on the cards unfortunatley....don't get me wrong the iMac is a good piece of kit (apart from really slow browsing on net even though I am on 2mbit), the wife really loves the way things are simplified on the mac and she has edited all our home movies since getting it and burned them to DVD.

But hopefully you can see my point of view that among speculation there is no clear way of finding out, even speaking to Apple employees they only found out 55 minutes before the site was updated.

Cheers

I can understand you're upset but that is just how it is. Apple isn't going to say what they are releasing as that would hurt sales of current stock. I know it is a "dirty" thing to do, but that is just how it is done.

Besies ... are you really losing out on all that much. I can assure you front row will be generally released soon. Maybe you're the type of guy that should buy used and/or previous gen mac hardware?

Well, look at it this way, as an introduction of Front Row , like, lets test it first, then lets expand it to every one who could really want it ( like me , why not, is a nice trinket) so lets be patient.

Nice work again Mr. Jobs
But dont forget your followers!

If you got the IR dock and the remote you would still need the front row app. Not sure if anyone has tried this yet, but I would doubt front row would "install" or "work" on your G5 ... at this point I'm sure they have something to lock it out or they would have just made a general release.

I'm guessing they are going to bundle front row into ilife 06 to encourage people to upgrade. This probably isn't too far away ... maybe even by holidays.
