Database application?

Hi guys,

Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place as I'm new here...

I was looking for a bit of advice as to which database solution to use now that I've migrated to mac. Basically me and one other person run a voluntary organisation, but next year she will be working away. I'm trying to create a database which we can both maintain from our locations (we both should have internet access) and can view changes in real time. The plan is she will do a lot of the admin (data inputting) which I can then use from my end in day to day management. It would be useful if I could have a copy on my machine which updates in realtime when I have an internet connection so that when I'm out visiting schemes who do not have internet access I can still update data which will then be uploaded as soon as i have a connection again.

She's running Windows and I'm running Mac. It seemed like Access might work if I authored the database in parallels but then I'm not sure of a) multiple access and b) security - personal data will be stored within the database. One thing that occurred to me is that I might be able to produce the database and then store it on a sever or in something like dropbox with a script (of some sort - any suggestions welcome!) which would then check for updates and update the remote copy (on the sever) and those shown on the machines at regular intervals (or upon running the script) - does that make sense? Is it even possible?

Perhaps an SQL solution would be better?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Hi,

I'm using fileMaker adavanced to do my data base work. It is a propraitery type data base (not SQL) but for me it has all the right features.
I also use the data to run both on Mac an PC and I have no problem on both platform.
Please note that you will have to sync the data. As far as I know (and use it) the software does not sync the data base.

I second PostgreSQL as a suggestion, though MySQL may very well be fine for your purposes as well. Both databases are SQL databases, though PostgreSQL has a broader feature set and MySQL is simpler and, in some cases, faster and requires less memory.

Both PostgreSQL and MySQL run on Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. Both have client libraries and applications for both operating systems and are widely supported by applications and middleware (e.g., JDBC, ODBC, etc.). Both are accessible via network and handle multiple concurrent users just fine. They differ slightly on the type of locking that occurs when doing updates and inserts, but that may not be a concern to you. Neither has a graphical user interface. Both have a variety of GUI tools created by third-parties for administering the databases.

I have used FileMaker Pro in both Mac and Windows for years. It is an invaluable database for me for several projects including my bookkeeping and research. Yes, it is a bit expensive and does have a bit of a learning curve .. but it is well worth it. It imports and exports well with other databases (except Access) as well as Excel and other programs. I highly recommend it.
