Airport Extreme setup?

Just got my first Mac (iMAC 24"), and as my trusty old Netgear RT314 router decided to go belly up today, purchased an Airport Extreme.
After finally getting a green light on the router, connected to cable modem, and from computer, through switch to router, managed to connect to Skype, but I am unable to get internet access (browsing)? - has me somewhat stumped. Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong?
I have set up both the wireless and the ethernet connection, with the ethernet being the first connection. I can ping other devices on the switch, as well as the router. I can access NAS HDD connected to switch. I can ping the WAN address of the modem, but can not get 'out' to the WWW, without connecting the iMAC directly to the modem, bypassing switch and router. Other Windows devices on network (XP) also can not access WWW.
I am still trying to find my way around the iMAC OS, so be gentle 😉

Welcome to the discussions!

The first thing to check is your cable modem. Power it down. If it has a battery, pull it. Let it rest at least 30 minutes, 60 or longer would be better.

Some cable modems take even longer than this for their memory to reset so they can recognize and reconfigure with a new device on a network.

Give that a try and please post back with your findings.

All power cycling has been done, letting cable modem come back up completely, then power the router back up, and finally the switch and computer.
I have green status lights for both ethernet and Wireless.
I am just confused, that I can access Skype, but can not get to WWW through the Extreme, but everything works fine (as you can see) when the cable is direct from modem to computer

I'm not familiar with Skype, but assume that it is texting or voice over IP. My guess is that it may be blocking access to the internet for other services. Can you disable Skype to do some basic troubleshooting?

You know that you can get an internet connection with the computer hooked directly to the modem.

The next step would be working with the Extreme (without the switch) to get internet access working. Unless you have another device between the modem and the Extreme, you would normally configure the Extreme with AirPort Utility to use "ethernet" to connect and connection sharing would be set to "share a public IP address". Are those the settings you are using?
