UPS for 24" iMac?

How big an UPS do I need to keep a 24" iMac up for a few minutes? I currently have a Cyberpower 425VA model, and after running a quick test (i.e. pulling the power cord) I discovered that it is not up to the task, so either it doesn't have enough oomph, or it may be time for a new battery.

Before we recommend are the any other peripherals you want power to in addition to the iMac? For example if you have external hard disks you should have them plugged into it too.

You don't mention hold old the Cyberpower is, if it's 3-4 years old yes the battery could be getting old, check to see if it can be replaced before buying a whole new UPS.

The number you want to look at is the power rating- how many watts the UPS can produce. A 425VA UPS is rated at 230 watts. The 24" iMac power supply has a maximum output of 280 watts. So with that in mind the 425VA is not enough. Based on wattage alone a 500-550VA 300/330 watts would be absolute minimum.

First I recommend getting an APC over Cyberpower and Roger is right it depends on how many additional things you want protected. For example I have a BE650G at work which runs my 24" plus 1 external hard drive with no problem and I can get a good 20 minutes out of it. While at home I have a 1500VA that runs my iMac, 3 external drives, and all of my networking gear. So in short I would recommend a 650-750VA with minimal peripherals, or if you want a better one that has a longer run time, go with an RS series. I like either the BR1300LCD or BR1500LCD because they have an LCD that shows you how much power is actually being used. However they do cost quite a bit more.

The UPS does have a few years on it so its battery is probably kaputski. I'll probably go with an APC for my next one using your numbers as guidance. I don't really need a long runtime, just a few minutes to save what I'm doing and shutdown, so I probably wont go 'whole hog' and get a super-fancy-pants one.

As far as other devices go, the only other thing I would want to keep running on battery power is a yet-to-be-purchased external hard drive (for Time Machine) so I'll probably go with something in the 650VA range.

Thanks for the information, y'all!
