Internet Connection Confusion

I've recently bought an imac G5 and am experiencing a problem with my internet connection.

Basically, I have a wireless router and am receiving a full signal. I also pick up someone else's router and get a full signal from that too. Unfortunately, when I select my router, Safari, Mail etc say that they cannot open a page, get mail etc. because I am not convected to the internet. When I select the other router (not mine) Safari, Mail etc connect just fine!

Obviously I'm keen to use my router not my neighbours.

I'd be really grateful for any advice or suggestions. Thanks

That is kind of funny. When you failed to connect to your router, Safari should show a big button with Network Diagnose. Click on it and follow the directions.

are you using airport extreme or another type of router?

if airport, try 'create network' so it only picks up yours and pick a channel that works...

I've done that and basically it says that the internet connection has failed However, when I click on the airport icon it says that I am connected to the internet with my Belkin router!

I'm using a belkin router but it should work ok. My airport card picks up a full signal but for some reason, I can't get Safari etc to recognise it!

If you are just using Belkin router, then you need to configure it by using the webpage. Type 192.168.2.1 in address using Safari. You can configure your internet connection. I am not sure if you are using cable or dsl, but you should be able to fix it.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

I'm using dsl and have configured the routher using 192.168.2.1 but I still can't get my apps to recognise the internet connection that the router generates. As far as I can tell, I've configured it correctly

You might be having a modem problem, first try connecting straight thru DSL modem from Imac using a cable and see if that works. Maybe a reset of the modem might work also, unplug at the wall outlet, wait 30 seconds and plug in again. Good luck Bob :~))

You probably have MAC (not macintosh) address filtering enabled on your router. If this is enabled, you will see the router just fine, but it will not allow you to connect through it. You need to configure the router via the IP address mentioned above. Either disable MAC address filtering, or enter the MAC address of your computer.

Unfortunately, MAC address filtering is not enabled. I'm really stuck now! Any other thoughts?

Have you tried unplugging your router and modem for about 1 minute, then plug back in and turn on again? That also has worked for me sometimes as it appears things occasionally need to be reset.

Is the DSL modem an ethernet modem or an ethernet modem router.

The Belkin router should be getting it's external IP address from the ISP and then using NAT distribute internal IP addresses to the clients on the network.

It sounds like you have mis-configured your Belkin router or you may have two routers on your network.

Please explain and have configured the routher using 192.168.2.1 in more detail.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post - I've now solved my problem.

The problem was the configuration of the router (sometimes the simple solutions are the last ones you look for)

Sorry for the cross-posting, but I've just read this thread and am having a very similar problem (for details see my post on the other thread here: cjedj, "New to macs - question re network setup", 06:56am Jun 20, 2005)

I have tried all the steps mentioned in this thread but am still having the same problem, does anybody have any other ideas?
