I recently bought Verizon DSL internet, but after I complete all of the set up steps it tells me to set up my account. When I open up the application to set up my account a page comes up saying "You do not have administrative rights and cannot install this application. Your installation will end now. Please logon with administrative rights to install this application or see your system administrator." The problem is I am the only user on my computer so I do not know how to "logon with administrative rights" Whats goin on??

My initial installation didn't go well either. Luckily, I was able to root out their tech support phone number. Use it wisely.

Check System preferences, the "Accounts" pane. On the "Security" tab, there should be a user listed who can "administer this computer". If it is not your regular account, you may need to log in as whatever account is listed as having the privileges to administer this computer.
If you need to reset the password of that account, you need to authenticate, by clicking on the lock and entering your password. Unfortunately, that is also likely to tell you you need to be an administrator.
To reset the password of the computer's administrator, read this article:

I am having the same problems with installing Verizon's accounts software.
I am the only user with admistrative rights and I still get the message 'You do not have administrative rights and cannot install this application. Your installation will end now. Please logon with administrative rights to install this application or see your system administrator." What a crock! I wouldn't really care if I have a verizon account since Tiger had no problems configuiring the connection and have 3 email accounts already so I don't really need another one. The problem is I can receive email from those accounts but I can't send out any mail. So I do need to set up a user account with Verizon to get that problem fixed. Verizon's online help was'nt very helpful at all. There is no way to set up their accounts without using the CD provided.
I'd be interested in finding out how to resolve this problem.

It certainly is possible to set up an email application manually for use with Verizon. All you need to know is the names of Verizon's incoming and outgoing mail servers, along with your Verizon account user name and password. You must know the latter two items; as I recall from the last time I did this I found out the name of Verizon's mail servers from instructions provided on Verizon's web site for manual configuration of email applications.
Yes, I figured as much. I did get the info on ingoing and out going servers. That's not the probelm. The real problem is that I can't set up an account name and password. The software to do that is contained in a CD that gives me
the message about not having administrative rights and not being able to install this application etc. That's the problem. Verizon doesn't provide any other alternative to that. I guess I'll have to take my chances calling their tech support number. There is nothing on their website that allows someone to set up the user name and password online.

Verizon in the greater Boston area uses PPPoE. For Mac OS X, If you have the username and password, you should be able to just put them into the PPPoE pane in Preferences > Network > [your Ethernet Interface]
Denise,
One of the problems with my initial installation was they sent me a CD that was for the Northeast part of the country. I'm in the middle of the Pacific. You don't need any Cd to set up your account. Call tech support and they'll walk you through all the steps. Verizon's tech support is uncommonly good.

That CD likely contains a PPPoE "Helper" program used with Mac OS 8 and 9. To log on to those older systems, Verizon had you first run the [installed] Helper program, which logs you on with your username and password, then start your Browser. So much for "always on".
I just connected my verizon DSL tonight and ran into the same problem with the software administrative rights issue.
Like Denise, I feel I don't really need it since I have .Mac and a hotmail address.
Unlike Denise, I am still able to send mail out from those accounts via Mail.app.
So my question is; Do I still need to contact verizon in order to get my account set up and install their software?

If you have a working internet connection on Verizon's service, and if your email is working to your satisfaction, then no - you don't need to install their software.
Hello,
It happend to me too. The problem is that the Verizon set-up CD included with your DSL modem kit is not Tiger compatible, hence the error regarding administrative rights.
The simple fix is to call in to Verizon tech support (Mac) and they will I.P configure your DSL modem for you. It took only about a 10 minute call and it was cinfigured for me over the phone.
By the way, i have a Westell 6100 DSL modem with Verizon Online DSL.

Hello,
The problem Lang is having has nothing to do with resetting any passwords. The set-up CD included with Verizon's DSL modem kit is not fully Tiger compatible (tech support confirmed it) hence the error message.

Hello,
Yes, there is an alternative. If you have Tiger, the CD set-up will give you problems (this is a known issue which they are working on).
Either call tech support and they wil set you up over the phone, or go to Verizon Online Help/Set-Up to change email settings and so on. The direct url is http://onlinehelp.verizon.net .
If anyone needs more info or help with their Verizon Online DSL, feel free to contact directly (i.m or email).
