Sudden, random freeze after 10.5.7 update

Four times in the past three days, since installing 10.5.7, my Mac has suddenly gone completely unresponsive. This has never happened before.

In each case, the screen still displays, but the clock in the upper right hand freezes where it is, and all keyboard and mouse input is ignored so I can't force quit anything. The machine will stay unresponsive and frozen until I reboot with the power key. This sudden freezing will occur regardless of whether I am actively working in an application, or I am away from the machine.

There are no entries in the system logs that accompany this freezing. I have fixed permissions and checked with TechTool and Disk Utility and found nothing amiss. I suspected a heat issue but I have not yet been able to find any problems - the fans seem to be working as expected and I haven't noticed any sudden spikes.

Any ideas?

I've got the same problem... not found a solution either but hope to avoid a complete re-install!

FYI, I have tried the following, without success:

Removed Norton AV.
Installed, and later removed, iAntiVirus.
Reset PMU.
Zapped PRAM.
Repaired Permissions.
Checked RAM with two different utilities.

On the last crash I had Activity Monitor, Temperature Monitor and a Fan Monitor open and on my screen; none of them showed anything unusual at the moment of lockup.

I've scoured all the logs, but there is no consistency to the final log entry before the crash. So whatever this is, it's not being logged.

I'm currently trying to run with Unsanity's APE disabled to see if that makes a difference. Nothing else has made a lick of difference so far.

Disabling APE did not help. Machine just locked for the seventh time.

I'm now looking for the best way to roll back to 10.5.6

I have the same issue. Freezes 4-6 times per day after the 10.5.7 update. Airport also turns off intermittently and can't be turned back on.

From what I am reading, 10.5.7 has numerous QA issues. Hopefully apple will release a patch to clean up this mess.

Got the same freezing issue here. PRAM, permissions, etc made no difference.

I suspect it is a third party software conflict; Apple are even saying that there may be unexpected issues with third party apps on the 10.5.7 download page.

This is the first Apple update I've ever had to cause so much trouble.

I recently updated my leopard os x to 10.5.7 and since I restarted I am unable to log in. My mouse won't move and the password option is available with the cursor blinking as if I could type my password but when I type nothing happens. Please help

I too have had this freezing occurring since the update to 10.5.7 the other day.

I seem to only have the problem when I close the lid on the MBP - and it should be going to sleep. However I have had several times where it does not go to sleep, clock stops, and everything is frozen/crashed. I am only able to hard reboot by holding the power button.

Same issues as aeonite. Everything was fine, then I installed 10.5.7 via Software Update. Now...Random freezing. Spinning beach ball which will respond to the mouse moving, but no clicks. No response to the keyboard. Time stops changing on the clock. Power button shutoff is the only option.

Same issue here. I've had it a few times after wake from sleep. 10.5.6 was rock solid.

About sums it up "Spinning beach ball which will respond to the mouse moving, but no clicks. No response to the keyboard."

Any ideas?

How about reverting to the backups you all made prior to doing the upgrade?

Then you could try removing third-party software and reapplying the OS update.

I am also having this problem with two different iMacs. I can't continue working this way so I will try and roll bak to 10.5.6. Hello Apple, where is the fix for these problems. It is too common not to be addressed.

I am having the same issue. I upgraded to 10.5.7 and am freezing randomly. It seems like if the CPU hits 100%, its pegging it and not stopping. I have to do a forceful reboot, and running Fusion causes my windows session to hard shutdown.

Same issue here except it mostly happens when I'm watching videos on my MBP. Plus 3 days ago I opened my bag with my MBP in it only to find it hadn't gone to sleep and was mesuring a whoping 100C°. This hasn't happened since I switched it from the 9600GPU back to the 9400GPU but still seems to be quite a flawed update...
