Need info on good dial up ISP

I would like to become an Apple user but before I pull the trigger to buy an Imac, I would like to know who provides a good dial up service. I live in Franklin, Wis. I was told AOL & Earthlink support Mac but is there anything else out there? I'm asking cause I'm not getting a lot of answers from the local Apple Store. I use my current PC 2 or 3 times a week just for surfing the net and word processing but I'm spending to much time upgrading security issues than I am using this computer. I'm hoping getting an Imac will make it more enjoyable using a computer again. But I got to ask after reading a lot of these discussions that Apples seem to have just as many irritations as my PC has with internet problems, browser problems, connection problems etc. so I don't know if I'll be ahead of the game with Apple.

I used Earthlink for years until I was finally able to get dsl. AT&T was also pretty good.

I know some people are happy with AOL - I have seen some real nightmares about them though.

Thanks Ian. I used AOL why back when I got my 1st computer and after a couple of uses I got rid of it and nver looked back. I used Earthlink also and it was fine until I found a less expensive ISP. By the way MSN is starting to drive me nuts, also when I called them (MSN)to see if they could send me a disc they said they did not support MAC.

I certainly wouldn't spend the money on aol--in most markets you can get minimal dsl for what it costs these days. I used access4less.net for a couple of years--$6 a month, much better at maintaining a connection than aol ever was. Their mail server would go down a day or two a month, though. Still, for the price--no ads, no special software, just a number that always connected, it was fine.

Any cheap isp that's reliable and doesn't put ads in your mail is fine. All you need is the connection--the mac will have everything else you need, so it doesn't matter if the isp "doesn't support macs."

Now we're talking, thanks Barbara. Can I request a disc from them or just down load. Now for the stupid question; if a down load how do you do it without an ISP to begin with?

You don't need anything from an isp, except your local access numbers and the settings for their mail server (whether POP or IMAP, the incoming and outgoing servers).

Hmm. the access4less.net website doesn't seem to be working--maybe they got bought out by someone else. In any case, go to www.findanisp.com and you'll find plenty of other alternatives in the same price range.

EDIT If you already have an isp when you get your mac, the setup process asks you about it. Enter the phone number and you're all set. Then go to mail.app and enter the mail server info. That's all there is to it.

Very, very helpful info, thank you again Barbara. After I got done replying to you the first time I nosed around the Apple Store and saw that they changed the IMAC. Great upgrades and the price remained the same. Glad I didn't buy one last week. Anyway will get one soon and be able to talk MAC. Hope it's easier than Spanish.
