I Cannot Complete Single User Mode (fsck)!!

Hello all.

I have the new iMac 20" Rev. B running on Tiger OS X 10.4.1, using wireless keyboard and mouse (I know I have to use a wired keyboard to complete Single User Mode)

When I do a 'Command Key + S key' after a restart
b using either the wireless or wired keyboard...

The "usual" string of text would appear on the black screen in Single User Mode, but it stops short of the below:

...(a lot more text lines)...

If you wish to boot the system, but stay in single user mode:
sh/etc/rc

CSRHIDTransitionDriver :: stop
localhost :/ root# [HCIController][start]
[AppleUSBHCIController][StopIsochPipeRead] - mInt1IsochInPipe = 0 - numReads Pending = 0
[start] 1

The last line just stays there without further prompts, I type anything on the keyboard and nothing happens, after a while the fans will pump up full speed and loud, waiting for a little longer also see no continuation of prompts etc...

HELP! May I know what is wrong here? The mac was just set up since Sun, I couldn't and wouldn't believe that after a few days that the OS system is already somehow "screwed"??

Thanks and cheers!

I have a powered USB 2.0 hub hook up to a bunch of things including my Wacom, PowerMate, Printer, charging my Shuffle while booting up Single User Mode...

But before you say something, I tried unplugging
b everything
except hooking up a wired Apple keyboard to 1 of the ports behind the iMac G5, and still gets the same text line in my 1st original post, I just didn't get a prompt to continue...

I am now "slightly" worried, that a less-than-3 days old iMac G5 would exhibit some sort of Mac OS error or corruption?? Weird... 😟

Cheers

It's a new mac that came with Tiger OS, I use Software Update to 10.4.1, this was done before plugging in all the other peripherals, ext FW disks etc.

Then I plug in all my devices, installed a few "many apps" including some Utilities and also some "hacks" you may called it like Candy Bar, nothing further... these are the same stuffs I have when I was in 10.3.9...

Maybe I would try booting up with the OS DVD do a repair and see if I can use Single User Mode then? But I have to do it tomorrow night, it is real late now, about 2.30am and I am watching Steve Jobs "live" on CNBC talking about the switch to Intel chips, the iPod and also iTunes...

Should I be worrying?

Thanks and cheers

Yes, do try to boot from DVD and run Repair Disk from Disk Utility. I wouldn't worry about it until you have tried to make it run after each of the four steps here:

1. Repair Disk with the DVD's Disk Utility
2. Recover the data if necessary with http://www.prosofteng.com/ Data Rescue
3. Repaired with
http://www.alsoft.com/

Disk Warrior 3.0.3.
4. Archive and Installed from DVD.

Thanks A Brody! Will try tonight.

Do you mean try
b each one of the steps
you given then try Single User Mode? Or do all 4 steps throughout? "Unfortunately" I don't have Disk Warrior at hand, but I got a good feeling if I do an Archive & Install everything should be ok.

But refresh my memory, in an A & I, all aspects of the User's settings, data etc is preserved right? That includes data like iTunes Music Data File, the iTunes Music Library itself, Safari Bookmarks? The only thing gets re-install is the OS itself and the Apple apps like iLife etc?

How about 3rd party System Preferences like Synergy etc, do I have to reinstall them again?

Actually it is not really a pain to reinstall them since I dun have a lot of them, just will take a bit of time... which ever method I will be taking: Just repair from Disk Utility or do an A&I, I just hope my OS behaves the way it is suppose to be...

Thanks and cheers.

Hi A Brody, just an update: I've tried booting from the OS DVD and used Disk Utility to repair the main disk, everything reports all right, ok...

But after that when trying to boot into Single User Mode I still encounter the same problem as originally described, last line just stays there, no command prompt...

Looks like I got to try an 'Archieve and Install' tonight after work...

Hope it will "cure" the problem, at least on the bright side is that I will have a spanking clean fresh OS... (again, just after 3 days??)

Thanks and cheers

Hi a brody,

b "Bad New",
I have performed a 1)Repair Disk using Disk Utility booting from the OS DVD and then 2)Did an Archieve and Install, 3)Updated to 10.4.1 and along the way updated the other software, repairing permission all the way

b ...but still cannot finish booting up into Single User Mode... 😟

Now I don't know what to do except maybe to
b reformat the hard disk
and reinstall again??

But now I am not sure if that would help, besides my mac is now still quite "brand new" and everything is running a-ok... and I really reluctant and "see no point" in reformating and reinstall again...

How?

Thanks and cheers

You've done everything I would have done. The fact it won't open in single user mode suggests something may be wrong with the computer.

Backup your data completely, and try an erase and install with no peripherals connected except Apple keyboard and mouse. Do not migrate the old data over. Test if it opens single user mode after that. If it doesn't, then call AppleCare and tell them you have a possible hardware problem you need help with.

Here's how to backup your data.

Hi a brody, thanks for the reply, I guess as much I'll have to go through that process again...! The fact and reason I am so reluctant is that my previous iMac 20" "fried" its logic board and was in the shop for almost 2 weeks then they told me there was a worldwide shortage of logic boards, so they replaced me with this new iMac 20" Rev.B, I got it late last week and just started setting it up last Sun... and till late Monday when I found out about the fsck problem.

Earlier tonight I just did the Archieve and Install and brought back all my data, files and stuffs, I think doing something like this within a week is really quite tedious and tiring...

For both occasions when I install Tiger, did its software update and also the rest of the software I only have the mac, keyboard, mouse and the ethernet cable (cable modem) connect to the mac, nothing else, and I repair permisson after each update and install...

Ya, you may be right that there may be something wrong with the mac, but c'mon, my 2nd "brand new mac" and it's like this??!! I can't really take it anymore??!!

Anyway, I think I am going to hold on to doing the reformat and testing it, like I say, it is 'working fine' right now, no any indication of glitch or anything, and besides unable to complete Single User Mode... well, I don't think "it is really that bad"...?? (me making sense??)

Maybe I will do the full reformat and reinstall when the next OS Update arrives or something go amiss with the mac, then I'll take that opportunity to test it...

Maybe in the mean time, I'll just ring up AppleCare and see what they say...?

Thanks and cheers.

Just one last piece of feedback. This doesn't apply to 10.4.1 since... well, there's only one of them! But for 10.4.2 and on, I strongly suggest running the "combo" updater downloaded from apple/support/downloads rather than running the "delta" updater that Software Update will try and sell you.

Combo updater = complete apps and everything needed to take the computer from 10.4.0 all the way up to 10.4.x where x is the new version you're installing.

Delta updater = bits and pieces of apps that changed between current OS and 10.4.x. Since you're just getting bits and pieces, not entire apps, delta updates are the ones that tend to display really weird behavior sometimes after the update.
