Cannot connect to iTunes store

I'm able to open iTunes but i get the error message: "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." I just downloaded the new iTunes 8.1.1.10 today and ever since then I've been unable to connect to the iTunes store. I've read most of the prior posts and have tried clearing the DNS server, checking and unchecking the Automatically Detect Settings (which i thought almost helped, it looked like it was about to connect, and then NO! wrong!) norton antivirus is disabled... I've run the diagnostic test for connectivity issues and here's what i got:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Dell Inc. Inspiron 6000
iTunes 8.1.1.10
QuickTime 7.6

This happened to me earlier. It was working fine and then i tried to download an app and it kept failing. i never changed anything or did anything that i can remember that might have caused it to happen. App store works, i just can't buy anything. My account with my balance is open, i just can't purchase anything because it keeps failing.

"Network connection timed out" is the message on the itunes screen.

oh well. guess i can't buy more apps. just got my ipod touch about 3 weeks ago and have purchased over 100 apps since then. maybe this little problem will curb my app addiction 🙂
