I'm able to open iTunes but i get the error message: "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." I just downloaded the new iTunes 8.1.1.10 today and ever since then I've been unable to connect to the iTunes store. I've read most of the prior posts and have tried clearing the DNS server, checking and unchecking the Automatically Detect Settings (which i thought almost helped, it looked like it was about to connect, and then NO! wrong!) norton antivirus is disabled... I've run the diagnostic test for connectivity issues and here's what i got:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Dell Inc. Inspiron 6000
iTunes 8.1.1.10
QuickTime 7.6
FairPlay 1.3.6
iPod Updater Library 8.1d19
CD Driver 2.1.0.1
CD Driver DLL 2.1.1.1
Apple Mobile Device 2.4.1.7
Apple Mobile Device Driver not found.
Bonjour 1.0.6.2 (118.5)

iTunes Serial Number D4EBC7BF74710F08

    Hey there,
I would try allow iTunes as an exception in Norton to allow it to connect to the Internet. Instructions on how to do that can be found [HERE|http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/0/7fb6e478e2a1abf78825708b00 558625?OpenDocument&seg=hm&lg=en&ct=us]. Give it a shot. Hope it helps.

Take itunes.exe out of the Norton list, and then put it back in. Also add iTunesHelper.exe to the list.

I also Have the issue of connecting to I-tunes store but can connecto to i-Tunes. I suppose the system is not working as the problem is happenning to a number of others also at the same time. I am going to e-mail I-tune the problem so they can fix it.

This happened to me earlier. It was working fine and then i tried to download an app and it kept failing. i never changed anything or did anything that i can remember that might have caused it to happen. App store works, i just can't buy anything. My account with my balance is open, i just can't purchase anything because it keeps failing.

"Network connection timed out" is the message on the itunes screen.

oh well. guess i can't buy more apps. just got my ipod touch about 3 weeks ago and have purchased over 100 apps since then. maybe this little problem will curb my app addiction

I am having the same problem and get the same error message. I have itunes 8.1 on my computer and have since been able to redeem gift cards and purchase music, but not tonight.

Mine seems to have fixed on its own. i came back a few hours later feeling stumped on what was wrong and to my surprise it was just working again. Hope you guys get yours working again soon. It was super frustrating while it was out.
