Unsupported Image Format

I'm using Nikon D700, D300 and D200. Have been using this setup with Aperture 2.1.3 for quite a while now. All of a sudden I'm getting the red screen with unsupported image format. I quit aperture earlier and restarted. Seemed to work for a while, but not they're popping up randomly. NEFs from all 3 cameras. Go figure... any idea what I can do to fix this? Images are referenced and the aperture library lives on a 1TB drive.

thx

I and others have reported this same issue ... my post on in is here:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2009294&tstart=0

This is a bug in Aperture; there is nothing anyone but Apple can do to fix it. I've sent feedback to Apple on this (via the Aperture menu -> Send Feedback item), and I suggest you do the same. If enough people bring this up, maybe Apple will decide to fix this really stupid and disruptive bug in their professional application.

Guys, I wanted to join this thread to see if anything helpful happens going forward - I'm in the same boat.

Aperture user for 2+ years. Today I imported NEF files from Nikon D200 as well as JPG files created by DxO Optics Pro software (post-processing). All files went in smoothly - first run through the set to cull out rejects was fine. Created an album (not a smart album) within the project to put favorites - upon reviewing the album a number of JPG images (which showed perfectly well before) flashed briefly and then turned dark orange with the Unsupported Image Format" message. This has happened to 20+ of the 300 JPG image files, and upon reviewing the original NEFs some (not all) of them behave this way as well.

FWIW, quitting and restarting Aperture seemed to fix things - but of course the question is "for how long". I did send the notice to Apple using the "Provide Feedback" page - hopefully our voices will be heard.

I have this problem on a Pentax K2000. I have found a workaround.

I take the PEFs (Pentax's RAW format) and use the Pentax proprietary software to convert the Pentax RAW (PEF) to DNG. Then for some reason Aperture handles the resulting DNG files just fine.

If your proprietary Nikon software reads the NEF files fine, see if you can resave them as DNGs and see if that works.

With the Pentax, for some reason Aperture doesn't read the EXIF data completely from DNG files created by the camera. But converting the proprietary RAW files to DNG using the Pentax software does work.

Maybe it will work for you as well. I do hope so!

Actually, the problem is not that Aperture does not read the NEF files - it's that it SOMETIMES calls them out as unsupported. What happened to me 2 days ago was that I imported 300 or so NEF files while renaming - no problems viewing them all. I then ran the NEFs through DxO Optics Pro - a post-processing package that created JPEGs from the NEF files (leaving the NEFs untouched). Imported the JPEGs into Aperture - again, no problems whatsoever.
The following day, I returned to that Aperture project and started looking through the images - and that's when a bunch of them popped as unrecognized. The very same ones that were fine the day before. The very same ones that were fine after I quit and restarted Aperture, for that matter.
So this is not a case of not being able to read a format - I've been using APerture since v1.5 with this same camera and RAW file format - and certainly it shouldn't have any problems with JPEGs. And once I quit and restarted it, it was fine again.
So the bughas to do with this sporadic problem, which apparently is not something unique to my system.

I had the red unsupported image too, but only few times on my Nikon D100 NEFs. In this case it helped to restart Aperture.

Manytimes more I had that with files from a Nikon 5000 slidescanner. Most of that TIFFs were at a resolution of 4000 dpi and very large ones up to sizes of 100 to 200 MB each file. In that case, I opend such a file with external editor, made few enhancements like to the resolution to 300 dpi without rescaling and saved it back to Aperture. I moved the original TIFF to trash and now they are all fine.

Yesterday I had such a red screen after I edited a large TIFF with a dimension of over 10 000 pixel on one side with Pixelmator. After saving that file back to Aperture, the red unsupported ... came on that file. Here again restarting Aperture fixed it.

I think it is time to have a upgrade to Aperture.

I too am having this problem but in my case only with TIFF, JPEG or PSD images created by or worked on by an external program. Images directly from the cameras (two Canons and a Sony) work just fine. I use referenced images. I can resolve the unsupported image problem by importing the image into the Aperture library. While I do not like this solution, it does resolve the problem. I'm currently scanning a large number of images, creating TIFF files. I have the "unsupported image format" with every scan. If I convert the scanned image to jpeg I have the same problem. Yesterday I shot jpeg images on the Canon and raw on the Sony - no problem. I've tested the problem tiff images on numerous other programs and only Aperture is having a problem.

It would be interesting to know if importing the image into the Aperture library resolves the problem for anyone else.

I just saw this tonight after importing Canon 5d Mk2 raw images. Several of these messages were on the console log:

8/4/09 21:26:28 [0x0-0x6b06b].com.apple.Aperture[1940] Aperture(1940,0xb0d90000) malloc: * mmap(size=126279680) failed (error code=12)
8/4/09 21:26:28 [0x0-0x6b06b].com.apple.Aperture[1940] * error: can't allocate region
8/4/09 21:26:28 [0x0-0x6b06b].com.apple.Aperture[1940] * set a breakpoint in malloc errorbreak to debug
8/4/09 21:26:29 [0x0-0x6b06b].com.apple.Aperture[1940] Aperture(1940,0xb0d90000) malloc: * mmap(size=126279680) failed (error code=12)
8/4/09 21:26:29 [0x0-0x6b06b].com.apple.Aperture[1940] * error: can't allocate region
8/4/09 21:26:29 [0x0-0x6b06b].com.apple.Aperture[1940] * set a breakpoint in malloc errorbreak to debug

This in a laptop with 4GB and no other applications running. Restarting Aperture "fixed" the problem, but this is still annoying.

I am using Canon 40D and shooting RAW [not sRaw or others] and what happens is the pics are just fine in browser viewer and actually many of them are just fine....but I just went to adjust one and while it looked fine in Aperture browser view when I clicked on it to adjust it it turned into a red unsupported image...I'm going to restart Aperture per others suggestions but I think there must be a better answer. [I'm going to note this as a bug also to Apple/Aperture so they get more of the squeaky wheels..politely of course.
