Stopping iTunes auto-adding downloaded audio from Safari

Hi,

I don't know which area this sits in but...

How on earth do I stop mp3/aiffs that auto-open into iTunes as soon as they download? I've been downloading stems from YouSendIt which immediately go into iTunes and start playing (which if you can imagine doing that for every stem I download for a multi track is unbelievably time consuming and frustrating!)

There must be a button somewhere to stop this surely?

Cheers!

Ben

HI Ben,

Since you are using 3rd party software (YouSendIt), that's most likely the culprit. I've never had tracks play automatically after downloading directly from iTunes.

Try posting in the iTunes for Mac forum here and see if anyone can shed some light on this for you.

@ Carolyn - You may want to read the opening post - I'm downloading from Safari, and once they download from Safari they immediately launch in iTunes.

@Malcolm - I originally had my mp3s playing in Quicktime, but the guy I work for was getting annoyed as the mp3s I was sending him were also defaulting to Quicktime. I don't mind mp3s playing in iTunes, I just don't want my Mac opening them automatically as soon as I download them! As it didn't do that when Quicktime was the default app why is iTunes taking this "initiative"?

Is there a button I can press to say "any mp3s/audio that I download, don't automatically add into iTunes"? It really is strange that this is a feature you can't switch off, as it is most frustrating...

I download mp3s fairly regularly with Safari (not what you think--a friend frequently composes guitar pieces and puts them on his web site for me to collect) and they NEVER automatically open in iTunes. I have things I download go to a Downloads folder I created at the root level of my hard drive (where both admin users will have access to the files), and UNchecked the box in Safari preferences to have safe files open automatically (because I consider that to be more secure).

Poking around just now I discovered that most, but not all, of these files are set to open in QuickTime Player rather than iTunes (he generally uses his Windows box to record, process, and upload his stuff). So I opened a folder with a batch of mp3s from various sources and discovered some are set to open in QuickTime, some with iTunes. Doing a little investigating I discovered that the difference is the metadata entry for "Kind"--those that open in QuickTime have a file Kind of "MP3 Audio" and those set to open in iTunes have a Kind of "MP3 Audio File" and, if you use GetInfo to change the default of which program to use, the Kind metadata entry for the file is changed. A Mac user receiving the file should get the file with the metadata entry intact, and so would have the same default program (QuickTime or iTunes) that you set. I'm afraid you would need to change the default before you send them. Although why your boss is so bent out of shape about it I don't know--I had never been concerned with the issue before, because I listen to the pieces with QuickLook or QuickTime Player, and if I like them I just drag 'n drop into iTunes.

Unchecking open Safe files has done the trick.

My boss is a very high profile chap in the industry, but is not too confident with Macs hence being "bent out of shape" as you put it, so likes things to be relatively simple, therefore I have to keep things simple. The weird thing is that certain files that I'm sending (even as "iTunes" files) are opening on his end as Quicktime and others as iTunes which is strange. I think I'll have to have a look at the settings on his Mac and see what its set to, and what could be causing confusion, as I've been using macs for nearly 15 years and am racking my brain to think of what on earth is causing this random app selection his end...

I'll be reverting back to Quicktime for the time being - thanks to the person who informed me about the Safe Downloads. I had had that switched off, goodness knows why Safari decided on... Ah - I tried beta4 then reverted back to 3 - that'd be why it was on!!

Thanks guys 'n' girls!!
