iPod won't turn on automatically when connected to computer or car stereo

My iPod won't turn on automatically when i connect it to my laptop or my car stereo. my stereo has a USB cable from the rear that i plug it into. i have to plug it in and then manually turn the iPod on myself for both devices.

i understand this isn't a major problem but it is annoying in the car. i've tried the reset function but it didn't make any difference.

any suggestions?
