convert .swf to .mov!?!?

hey guys

i have leopard OS...quicktime pro..7.5.5

i have a bunch of .swf files i need to convert to a .mov

apparently the quicktimes new "update" wont allow any flash stuff to be played in quicktime!?

i heard of other programs like iWisoft and stuff that can convert it but i dont want to download any limited time trials that will run out, our pay for some other applications when i already have a bunch which should be able to do the job.

is there anyway in quicktime pro to do this?

flash's video encoder thing...is only for making .mov go to flash and not the other way around

also please do not suggest exporting to quicktime through flash itself because i have alot of .swf that were created a while ago on flash MX and those .swf files arent able to be done that way.

hmm ive been trying to figure this out for years now!
please help! thanks!

QuickTime used to support playback of .swf files (published from Flash as version 4, 5 or 6 formats). This merely enabled the Flash track be placed inside a .mov container and no "conversion" was needed.
In QuickTime 7.1.3 all support for those Flash tracks was ended because of security issues and those old files will only display a black window (with audio, in most cases).
Since QuickTime can no longer open .swf files in a new Player window the Pro upgrade has nothing to convert or export.
I have dozens of Flash track "movies" used in my Web pages and now nothing works as before.
If your .swf file doesn't use "mouse actions" you could use any "screen capture" application to "record" in QuickTime formats.
Not many people using Flash save using the .swf container and instead use the .flv file format. Those .flv files can be opened and "exported" with the help of http://perian.org component and QuickTime Pro.

thanks for the reply.

i do have a screen capture program, but unforunatly i heard from other people trying this technique it will slack a little bit on quality, and the frames would be slightly incorrect.

thats quite unfortunate about quicktime stopping with the whole security issue. it seemed like quicktime pro would be something able to handle anything but i suppose i need another application for this task than...

i am suprised this isnt a more popular issue. there are so many flash artists out there, there must be one solid technique of getting it to video..

i heard of some programs that may be able to help. i suppose i will get the trial for i dont have the money to be buying any more applications.

hi, I have the same problem. I have been looking for a good swf to mov converter for mac. But most of software just can convert flv video. At last I choose iwisoft swf to video converter you mentioned. It's for windows os. It has no time limit, but has a watermark on the upper left corner of the output Mov video. this iwisoft really good for windows os. I convert swf to mov on my windows pc, then share to my macbook.

I still want to use a good swf converter for mac. Does anyone know such a program?

I was about to post a new thread but having read QuicktimeKirk's explanation above I think this thread might be related. I made a lot of QTs (.movs) from Flash a couple of years ago on an older machine. When I came to re-open them this weekend to put a reel together I just got black/blank screens. The info panel tells me the codecs are Flash. I still have the original .fla files, but is there a codec somewhere I can download to prevent having to remake those files? Or is (as Kirk implies) this a case of having to re-export everything?

The biggest difference between .swf and .flv are twofold:
The .swf file extension uses "vector" based graphics and allows "mouse actions" (clicks). Vector based files are "scalable" (small dimensions in the source can be displayed full screen without distortion). The mouse action allowed user involvement (click an object and another "action" occurs). This allowed things like interactive "games" in the .swf format.
QuickTime version 5 was the first version to allow these Flash tracks. Version 6 continued this support but the "Publishing" (export from the authoring application) had different requirements. QuickTime version 5 supported only those files Published by the authoring app as Flash 4. QuickTime 6 supported both Flash 4 and 5. I have dozens of Flash based files on my Web Site but they no longer work with QuickTime 7.1.6, or above.
The .flv (Flash Video) files most often use traditional video codecs (H.263 or H.264) with a supported audio format. QuickTime can't natively open these files but http://perian.org component does allow for conversion to QuickTime formats.
If your older files include a "Flash Track" (Movie Properties window of QuickTime Pro) then QuickTime will open them but display a black playback window.

Thanks QuickTime Kirk.

"If your older files include a "Flash Track" (Movie Properties window of QuickTime Pro) then QuickTime will open them but display a black playback window." The annoying thing is these files were never .swfs or .flvs. I exported them directly from the original .fla Flash files. They are now blank .movs. I think I'll just have to re-export from the .flas.

Flash MX Pro 2004 Version 7 (and below) have two ways of exporting a FLA to a quicktime video.

1. Converted the FLA with flash tracks along with Actionscript interaction. Quicktime doesn't support this flash file/playback anymore.
2. Basically flattens the FLA to a Quicktime Video. No Flash tracks and no Actionscript interaction. Quicktime support this because the exported file is a regular quicktime video.

Both of these exports have the extension .MOV.

Andy you have #1 above.
