How do I remove icons from my desktop?

So Im a new Mac owner and still trying to figure out how to use this. I installed my MP480 Cannon all-in-one printer and these two icons for an on-screen manuel and user registration are on my desktop under my Macintosh HD ***. They are on the desktop and not the dock. But when i tried to move them to the trash they erased from my finder menu. How do i remove these icons from my desktop without deleting them in my finer permanently?

Drag and drop them onto the icon of your hard drive, or choose any folder anywhere on your hard drive and drop them onto that folder. As you use your Mac and create documents that you need to file in some orderly way, you'll probably devise your own hierarchy of storage locations that makes sense for you. (Or if you don't, you'll wish you had!)
