trying to stream audio from ABC Grandstand

I have been trying to connect to the ABC grandstand call of NRL games for months via the internet. When I get to the NRL Live scoreboard page and click on the audio button and then on the ABC, I get a box (Safari shows a QuickTime box; Firefox an empty box) that says -3285: Disconnected. Every time I get an update of some application I try again, but no joy. While my iBook was still under AppleCare, I tried telephone support as well. They had me download updates for Flip4Mac and when that didn't work, I didn't have the time to call back.

I have an iBook G4 with OS 10.5.7, Safari 3.2.3, Firefox 3.0.10, Window Media Player 9.0, Real Player 10.1.0, QuickTime 7.6, Flip4Mac WMV Player 2.2.2.3 and recently, after reading another discussion, I downloaded Perian and Adobe Flash Player..

I also have an iMacG5 PC with the same software and the same problem.

Any other suggestions? I live in a very remote area, broadband is here but radio is often lacking good reception, and despite recent news, I love Rugby League.

Hi grawingirl

I'm listening to the stream right now on my Windows XP laptop. The site expects the Windows Media Player to play its content. WMP is launched via an ActiveX control in another Internet Explorer Window.

I tried accessing the stream
http://nrl.com/liveaudio.htm?mediaurl=rtsp://wm9.streaming.telstra.com/ucs-whnrl0live1
directly with VLC, to no avail.

I give up on this. Looks to me like you need Internet Explorer to listen to this radio stream. Internet Explorer is only available on Windows operating systems. Don't even bother trying the old mac version - there is no ActiveX for Mac OS X.

Actually I think it's quite stupid to limit access to streams this way, maybe someone else is able to troubleshoot this.

Sorry

I live in far western NSW. Time is not the issue. I thought Flip4Mac took care of WMP on the Mac. Obviously I was wrong. Yes, it's very frustrating. I'll look for a place on the ABC web site to ask if their system supports Macs. Thanks for checking Greg, and for your efforts. Meanwhile I guess I'll continue to listen in the static.

😟 is right!

HI,

ABC supports the Mac OS but not Flip4Mac. They use Flash plugins with Safari.

Make sure you have the most recent version of Flash

Try repairing disk permissions also.
Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility.

Wow. In the time it took to download Adobe Flash Player Plug In and try to repair permissions (ran for 15 minutes and never started), the solution has appeared. Outstanding. I will try it next weekend. Thanks Carolyn, and thanks Greg for trying it. NRL, to answer your question, Carolyn, although Rugby isn't bad either.

I had downloaded what I thought was Flash Player last week, but the download looks different, so I'm hopeful. No problem trying Firefox, which I had already tried before.

Now to try repair permissions again.

Love Apple Discussions and the help you provide.

Okay, Rugby League is on again and, using Firefox and having installed Adobe Flash Player and repaired permissions, I still get QuickTime popping up and the message is disconnected.

Please note: I can listen to other ABC internet programs, just not this one that must be accessed through the NRL web site.

I checked the Firefox preferences, and Quick Time Plug-in is the application listed to use, and there's no Flash Player Plug-in listed. I don't know how to get Flash Player listed there if that's what I have to do.

Carolyn, Greg, anyone else out there?

Thanks,
Grawingirl

Hi grawingirl

Just to make sure the plugins are correctly installed, visit those sites again to download the plugins needed.
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/otherversions/ - here'll you'll have to specify, which version you want. You say you're running a G5 so you need the PPC version for Firefox.

As far as I know you will download two disk images, that you'll have to open manually and the run the installer packages.

Before running the installer, make sure Firefox and Safari are quit.

Also, while running the installer, have a look for the customize button: It shouldn't be, but maybe you have to specify explicitly to install the plugins for firefox.

Kind regards
