Cannot disconnect file-sharing user

Hello everyone,

Keef_S on this forum had a similar problem recently: I logged on to my mac using another mac in the same network under my administrator username and password (box to save password was UNCHECKED). After the file transfer I ejected all network drives so that no one else could access my computer from this other mac.

Whenever I selected my mac in the permissions list of a finder window I was asked for my username and password. Here it comes: Despite clicking cancel all my drives showed up again! I was unable to fix this problem - even changing my administrator password on my mac did not do the job. I had to disable file-sharing in order for my mac not to mount automatically on that machine. I searched and found that there is no keychain with my password saved.

To me, this looks like a bug. Can anyone help? I am clueless.
Thanks a lot,

Tobias

When you select a shared computer from the sidebar in the finder window even if you dont authenticate it will still show the sharepoints you have guest access to.

On the mac running the sharepoint goto the accounts preference panel in the system preferences and disable guest access.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for a swift response. I am aware that all computers with file-sharing enabled show up in the sidebar. The sharepoint-running mac does not have a guest account enabled.

The problem is that it automatically logs onto my machine using my administrator name and password even though 1) the login info was never saved to the keychain of that mac and 2) my remotely accessed mac was unmounted with all drives after the file transfer was complete in order for no one to be able to access my drives.

What happens now is: I click on my Mac in the network from this other machine. I can either use the drop-box, or log in with my username (say, abc) for further access. As soon as I click on the log-in button, the current user name of the other mac (say, xzy) is filled in without password. If I hit cancel now, it DOES log in with my administrator name and password, even though I just aborted the connection.

It makes no sense to me that the computer remembers the login info it was not supposed to. It makes even less sense that it logs on when making the connection is being canceled mid way.

The more I think about it, the more it seems like a bug. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,

Tobias

I too am also having a similar problem. I cannot disconnect my iMac from my MacBook Pro. Every time I click the "Disconnect" button from my iMac, it automatically reconnects even though I unchecked the "save password" box.

At first, prior to connecting, I could view just the shared files. Being that my parents also use my iMac, I want to maintain my privacy.

The only solution I found that solves this is, when you open "Macintosh HD", 1) click on the column view button, 2) then click on the user you're trying to disconnect from. 3) From here, if you know the other users login info, simply connect to their computer using their info. 4) From there and you should be able to see the eject icon next to the user's shared files. 5) Click on all of them, and you will be disconnected.

If anyone knows how to fix the problem I mentioned earlier about clicking the "Disconnect" button and how the system automatically reconnects even though the password isn't saved, let me know.

You know, I have tried both. Neither the disconnect button, nore ejecting the disks worked. However, after I had turned off file-sharing, changed my admin password, and waited a few days before turning file-sharing back on I was finally unable to access my computer remotely without typing my password. I can't say whether that the computer I had been using to log in to mine had been restarted in the meantime. That might be the reason why it finally "forgot" my login info.

Still, it looks like a bug to me. Say, there are multiple users on the other mac, how would you switch to another if it kept you logged in with the same username?

Best,
Tobias

Hi Tim,

Thanks for replying. I did try that when I initially had that problem. There was no such entry. Again, there is no reason for why that computer should have remembered my login info. Nothing was checked at login to save passwords, nothing showed up in the keychain, and after I was done, I ejected all disks. Changing the admin password on my machine did not do the job either. It was the login-keychain that had to be changed or file sharing to be disabled in order for the other computer not to access everything on my mac automatically.

Puzzled,
Tobias
