Is there a way to make my guitar sound like other instruments?

Hey, I was wondering if there is some way to make my guitar sound like other instruments, for example a string arrangement, or a violin? I remember when I was little my uncle had an effects box that did this (he could make his guitar sound exactly like a violin!) but I was wondering if there is a software avenue to do this with. If not in garage band then what other program? Thanks!

Why not just use the software instruments in GB (without the guitar)?

Because I can't get the free flowing sound I can get just by playing the notes with my own fingers. It always ends up sounding artificial. But this thing my uncle had when I was little sounded so so so real.

you can use a Guitar to MIDI converter.

This way you can use a Software instrument in GB instead of the sound of your guitar.

I haven't any experience with these, so don't want to recommend one or another.

You can also buy guitar with MIDI out built-in!
