My Command + S always acts as a "Save As"

Ok, so no matter what app I am using and no matter where the document originated from. Everytime I copy a doc to a new location and then I make my changes and rename it during a first (intended) Save as. After that point when I save the file using Command + S, I always end up getting a Save As prompt. I have tried everything I can think of, but this is driving me insane and wasting my time. Anybody know how to fix this?

Hello Philip and welcome to the discussions. It is possible that you have inadvertently changed the hotkey settings. You can look in System Preferences>Mouse and Keyboard. Check to see if the command+S is designated as "save as". Another possibility could be that you have a corrupted .plist

Here is an article you might want to look at.

It will not hurt your Mac to trash this item, it will re-generate after a reboot. BUT it may revert to factory defaults. Save it to your desktop and if it is not the problem put it back.

Thats the the big kicker. Any program (Microsoft Word, Any CS2 or CS3 app, General Text editor) I use that I can open a file, make changes and then do a command + S causes it to immediately do a Save As. I tried what the Glynn is recomending. It has shown quick results that seem to have resolved the issue, but by the point in the day I had already put in most of my work for the day, so I am going to test it out today and make sure it has resolved the issue.

Alright, I have tried it now with several different files, and seem to have resolved some of the issue, but the root problem still remains. So, I take a file, copy it to a new location, rename the file. I then open it to work on it, and when I go to save, the first time I do so it does a save as, after I save as the first time, I can do a command + S and it does a regular save. Any ideas? (lol, at least some of the pain is gone, I am a little happier)

Well I guess we are half way there. But I'm a bit confused, what exactly is the "root" problem?
from your first post you stated---
"Everytime I copy a doc to a new location and then I make my changes and rename it during a first (intended) Save as. After that point when I save the file using Command + S, I always end up getting a Save As prompt"

What are you trying to avoid/do?

May 27, 2009 10:35 AM in response to Glynn

Well the root problem is that when I copy a doc to a brand new location. Then rename the file. Then I open the file and make changes, when I go to save the document using command + S (It use to) always perform a "Save As" and I would have to browse all the way to the location (it wouldn't even remember where I opened the file from), and then save over the file.

Now. After I get all the way to the point of saving, the first time I save the file, it performs the "Save As", after I browse out to the file then its like it remembers it from that point on; so long as I leave the file open. If I close and reopen the file, the process starts all over again from the save aspect of it.

So my goal has always been to try and figure out, why the system is not retaining where the file is coming from, and why it keeps poping up with the "Save As" (which I think we all are suspecting this is partially due to the first problem).

The reason I feel there is something really rotten is because up until two months ago, I had a PPC G4 running 10.4.2, and this was never an issue. I did Command + S and it just saved the file to the correct location, regardless. So I am not sure what changed other than the physical aspects, or could be attributed to the person who set it up (not me, lol).

Trust me I appreciate what you have done for me so far, you have made my life ten times easier and you are a god among men for that alone. I am still unsure if the question has been ansered though because of this. Any ideas?

Version OSX 10.4.2. Unfortunately, to my knowledge no. I just received this machine two months ago from our IS department after a clean reload and reinstall of Tiger. I have checked for updates, but no I have not actually run any. Our IS department fully reloaded the system and did their usual. immediately after I received it, it started doing this. At first I asked them for help, but they had no clue why it did this, and I have not been able to get an answer out of them for some time, so I took it upon myself to reach out to the forums and see if this was something easily resolvable. That is why I know some of what you are talking about, but some of it, I am not playing, we will put it that way lol...

Here's where I'd start...

Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then...

Apply the combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html

Repair Permissions after re-install, then reboot.

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

I agree with BDAqua. If your IT department allows you to do standard updates, fine do it.
The only thing that concerns me is...are you able to back up your important data? Though it is
unlikely you will lose anything by running the combo update, there is always that chance.

Remember to repair the permissions before and AFTER the updates...

Cheers,
Glynn

We are allowed to do updates, and thankfully I have no data on my machine, it is all stored on the network for just such a reason, lol. I will definetly try what both of you are recommending; however, I might have to wait a little while before it becomes available. I have some deadlines that need meet first before my superiors find out. Thanks though for all the help. I will get back as soon as I have accomplished this.
