Using ipod on Estima TV

I have an imported Toyota Estima with a factory fitted DVD/TV player in it (the type in the dashboard and with a screen that hangs down in the middle of the vehicle). In the very back there is a VTR connection and I have tried plugging my ipod video in it to play videos but it hasn't worked.
I've set the ipod to TV out and tried both NTSC and PAL. Set to NTSC nothing happens except a buzzing sound and set to PAL there is sound but no picture.
I've tried setting the player to TV as well as DVD but that hasn't done anything.

The instructions in the car are all in Japanese apart from the words "DVD and TV" on the remote which doesn't help!

There seems to be nothing to identify what kinds of player it is in the car either, unfortunately.
