Hacked through bonjour?

Hi All-

I'm fairly computer savvy, but really have little knowledge about hacking and networks, etc.

I was on ichat at my work computer today and got an im from an unknown person. Usually, I don't respond, but they started out the conversation the exact same way my boyfriend always does.

Anyway... this person then said he was hacking me through bonjour. I closed ichat and shut down my computer, now I'm wondering what he could have gained access to? I realized I have important information within a particular folder on my hard drive. Could he have obtained that? What should I do??

Thanks!

imac, Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Well, I don't know about that. If this was an AIM chat, the first thing I would do is go into iChat's Preferences, click on Accounts, then click on Security. If it's an unknown person, then maybe you have "Allow Everyone" selected? Change it to "Allow People in my Buddy List." If it was a Bonjour chat, that is local network (same subnet) only, so one of your coworkers is messin' with you, and they are going to be able to see you if you iChat is active and Bonjour IM is enabled. (Click on Bonjour in the left hand column of iChat's Preferences and if Bonjour IM is enabled, and you want it to be enabled, consider deselecting "Publish my email and IM addresses".)

While I doubt that it is related to this, it wouldn't hurt to pay a visit to System Preferences, Sharing, and make sure that you only have the services enabled that you need. Unless you are hosting your own website on your computer, or allow your computer to be a file server for others, or need to connect to it remotely when you are afar, you probably don't need anything enabled there.
