Can't See Actual Pictures in Finder -- See Generic JPG Icon Instead

When in finder, I was once able to use the finder to browse .jpg and .png files. Now I just see a generic PNG or JPG icon while in coverflow or when listing as icons. When viewing in columns, I CAN actually see the photo. I really want this to work so I can quickly browse using icons and coverflow. Apparently, something has changed and I don't know how to change it back.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

They are on both my apple harddrive and external harddrive. They are pictures that I have taken, scrapbook papers that I have downloaded from the internet. They are all .jpg and .png files. I once could see the actual item when in cover flow and view as icons. Now I can't. They are just eneric icons - so I can't see them. When I use photoshop elements bridge, I can see the items just fine. But I like to see them in the finder to glance quickly and find what I need. Now I can no longer see them....
Thanks Again!

It really should "just work" if show preview is checked for the folder. Occasionally the Finder has a mental melt-down and displays generic icons instead. When that happens a restart of the Finder usually fixes it. Here's something else to try (and I actually prefer it for browsing images):

1. Go to the folder and open it in Finder
2. Hit Command-f to bring up the search window
3. Click on the name of the folder in the search window toolbar to escape from the idiotic "This Mac" default
4. In the Kind option, click the double arrows on the box after "is" and select Images
5. All the images should now display in the window
6. As a bonus feature, down at the bottom of the window you'll see a slider, drag it to change the size of the thumbnails--you can go all the way up to about 512 pixels, which is why I like it for browsing images

If you don't get custom thumbnails in the search window either, something is seriously borked.

Gena,

Not sure if you fixed this completely yet. I had exactly the same problem. Turns out it was a corrupt preference file for the finder. Simply delete the preference file (in your library folder ==> in preference folder ==> com.apple.finder.plist). Then relaunch finder (same way you did by right-click + option, then click on finder icon in dock ... or ... by force quit program and selecting finder).

Good luck!

THANK YOU! I have been struggling with this for months, but without the time to research it. As a web site and apps developer, it is unacceptable. The relaunch of the finder from the dock fixed my problem. I was searching for help along the lines of deleting preferences files as mentioned in another reply (thanks for that, which I'll try when this doesn't work for me) and found this. I feel better! 🙂
