the start sound when I turn it on

Open System Preferences/Sound and move the Output volume slider to the left. One important issue with not being able to hear the startup chime is this. If you have the volume turned up and don't hear that chime, something could be wrong. The sound indicates that diagnostic tests run immediately at startup have found no hardware or fundamental software problems.

I don't think it's possible out of the box. There are some external programs you can download that will add the setting into your preferences where you can mute the start-up sound.

I just tested it and the output volume option on the bottom is just the normal volume controls. I think it would require an external program. If that's not correct, let me know, I'd like to learn this stuff for myself.

Another and even more simple solution is to leave your machine on 24/7. Many Mac users (myself included) do just that. You can set it to sleep when you're not using it.
