Moving photos between computers, with metadata?

I have two machines, a laptop and a desktop, both with iPhoto '09. My main photo library is on an external HD attached to the desktop.

I went on vacation, took some photos, and did some cropping, writing comments, etc on the airplane on the way home, on my laptop. Now what I'd like to do is add them to my desktop's library. Seems like it should be simple -- I want to get my processed, commented photos from one iPhoto library to one on a different machine. But I can't figure out how to get the metadata (the title/comments, not the EXIF data) to the desktop. I've tried:

• exporting the file to a thumb drive and importing -- no metadata transferred. Tried several formats.

• sharing the laptop's library, viewing it on the desktop machine (where I can see the titles and comments). I can copy files into the desktop's library this way, but without the metadata.

This must be easy, right? What's the secret? Apologies if the answer is posted somewhere in here -- I looked, but couldn't find it.

I'll give it a shot. Will it work between machines or will I have to actually copy over the library from one machine to the other (which would be a huge pain).

Doesn't it seem, in this day and age with people having multiple computers, that Apple would address this issue directly?

On a related note, I'll want to upload these pics to Flickr when I'm done, and my understanding is that Flickr will only keep a photo set in sync with the machine from which is was uploaded originally. I'd love it if iPhoto could just subscribe to an existing photo set -- then I could upload pics to Flickr from my laptop, and later sync my desktop to Flickr to get them into my main local library.

Anyway, thanks for the help -- I'll try it when I get home from work and report back.

It worked. Looking back now it seems like it was simple, but it wasn't too clear how to use iPhoto Library Manager between machines. You have to activate file sharing and share the folder with your pictures inside, then quit iPhoto on both machines before copying photos (see the Help file in iPLM for directions).

Thanks for your help, Terence!

On a related question, do you know how to move photos (with associated event, faces, etc. data) from one drive to another?

My machine is a MBP and I keep all my photos on an external drive for space considerations. Many time though, it's convenient/necessary to store photos for a shot time on the internal HD or a different external disk until I can move them to the main storage disk.

If I've imported these photos to iPhoto and updated faces info and perhaps other data, can I move the photos to their ultimate destination and keep all the changes in the iPhoto library that I've made?

Thanks, Jim
