Problem with Verbatim SmartDisk Firelite used for backup

I have used the Firelite disk for back up for 15 months with no problem. Then suddenly my G5 would not recognize the disk (icon did not appear on desk top and Time Machine would not work). If I shut down the G5, unplugged the disk from the firewire port, restarted the G5, and then plugged the disk in again, the icon would appear and it would back up fine until I shut the G5 down again. After a couple of weeks, the computer would not recognize the disk even after shutting down and restarting the G5. I took the disk and cable to an Apple store where they plugged it into a laptop (apparently the type of firewire port the disk uses no longer is available on the new IMacs) and the icon appeared on the desk top and the files were accessible, apparently meaning the disk and cable are OK. I brought the disk home, and when I plugged it into my G5 now, the green light on the disk that shows it is powered up no longer lights. That is a first, it had always lit even when the icon did not appear on the desktop. I tried the process mentioned in another topic here, turning off all power to the computer for a few minutes, and then plugging it in again, and that did not work. Any ideas?

Thanks for the info. My drive has two 6 pin firewire ports into one of which I plug a firewire cable, the other end of which I plug into one of my G5's 6 pin firewire ports. The drive gets its power from the computer through the firewire cable. Are you talking about the firewire ports on the back of my G5 since they are rectangular shaped, somewhat the shape of a brick? Or are you talking about the brick-like transformers so many devices use when plugged into a wall outlet for power?

Yes, I just copied a couple of pictures from the computer to a CD in my LaCie burner. I used the same firewire cable that I use with the disk drive that is causing the problem. I opened the pictures from the CD after burning and they were fine. I reattached the hard drive to the G5 using the LaCie firewire cable, and the computer still didn't recognize the drive.

Then unfortunately, it sounds as if the drive is failing. Failing drives will sometimes mount, as your did in the Apple store, and they will then fail to mount at other times. Since both the cable and the port check out, the only conclusion is that it must be the drive. If you have another Mac, or a friend with one, try and mount the drive and see whether it can be repaired using Disk Utility. You might also try getting a firewire hub and plugging the drive into that. I would also strongly recommend that you get another external drive and start backing up again.
