Dock has been replaced by the "default" version.

iMac G5. I just returned from a 2 week trip and powered up my iMac. When I logged on, my custom dock settings had disappeared and the default dock settings are in place. I checked the com.apple.dock.plist and it showed a creation date of today. I tried replacing the plist with the one from my backup/clone but a new "default" plist is created and wipes it out. I've tried logging off and on and also restarting but the plist is always replaced with a new default one.

Suggestions?

Active: iMac (G5, G4), Powerbook G4, iPhone, iPod, MP2100 Retired: iMac G3, A2c, Mac OS X (10.4.11), Mac OS 10.5.6, Mac OS 9.2.2, iPhone OS 2.2.1, Newton OS 2.1

Are all your other files there?

If you haven't done any maintenance lately, I think you should get Applejack...

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...

applejack AUTO

Then let it do all 5 of it's things.

At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.

The 5 things it does are...

Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

As far as I can tell.

I've already Repaired Permissions - didn't help
I've already run Repair Disk in Disk Utility while booted up from external hard drive - didn't help. In fact as soon as the external hard drive's OS was up, the iMac G5 wiped out the backup com.apple.dock.plist!

I'm going to go through and launch all the applications that I can remember being in the dock and see if I can get them back.

I'm going to keep an eye on it then. Today I had to restart after running Software Update and my re-built dock stayed as I'd set it up so maybe the fact that the computer was powered off for 2 weeks caused the battery to weaken, but after being powered up for 4 days, it was able to keep the settings for at least a short power down time.

Update. Yesterday I installed Safari 4 which required a restart of my iMac. When the iMac restarted, the Dock had lost its Auto-Hide, Magnification, and Location settings, going back to the defaults. However, the applications I'd added to it were still there unlike the first time when even they were dumped.

Yeah, it's a puzzle. However, it isn't a problem as long as I don't shut down the computer. The oddest thing is that the problem only started after I'd had the computer shutdown for 10 days. It has to be a hardware/firmware problem on the G5 because of it trashing the Dock settings on a totally separate external bootable drive. If the problem was on the internal drive, then it wouldn't have affected the external one. I haven't changed the PRAM battery yet, so that might still be the culprit.

Strangely enough, this exact problem happened to me just now when I started up my MBP (running Leopard). I have been using my computer regularly though, no lengthy time off like the original poster.

My spaces and expose preferences were gone as well; don't know what else is amiss as I've just discovered this phenomenon.

Not a huge problem (I've been able to reconstruct my dock) but would like to know why it happened and be assured that there are not larger issues to worry about.

It just happened to me after a chain of events. It's easy to point a finger, but I really have no idea what caused it. Here's what happened :

1. Firefox 3.5.1, Flash video stutters, sound synch off, system crash.
2. Forced system restart.
3. Used Flash Uninstaller to uninstall latest Flash 10 plug-in.
4. Restarted computer after Uninstall.
5. Dock reverted to default.

I dragged the dok plist into the trash and copied an older dock plist from backup files. Dock settings restored.

So, I don't know what happened. I think either the system crash or the Flash Uninstaller has something to do with it. My dock has had no probelms since I got my Macbbok in Aug.'06. Flash wasn't a problem before, but since Flash 10 or Firefox 3.5.1 (I've lost track), certain sites which played flawlessly before no stutters, stops and resumes with out of synch sound.

I am so tired of these constant upgrades that break something else or cause something else not to function properly.

Hello jebejava, and a warm welcome to the forums! 🙂

Very good eport on your part, thanks!

But if I were to venture a guess, I'd say there was sme corruption beforehand, I reserve the right to be wrong of course! 😉

Since I and mamy that follow my spiel, do not have the problem, please consider this with all due respect, as I'd guess Apple cannot/does not give you the downside of OSX. 🙂

And I offer this for your amusement or edification...

"Try Disk Utility

1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214

Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.

The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.

Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.

If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!

If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...

Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.

If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

Hi BDAqua,

Thanks for your detailed reply!

I've actually been very conscientious about permissions repair and running Verify Disk in Disk Utility and clearing log files with MacJanitor. In fact, I do permissions and log files almost everyday and Verify Disk about weekly and have been doing it for just about the life of my MacBook (mid-'06). Always check permissions after any software install or upgrade too. RAM has been maxed at 2gb since the first day (and checked regularly with the OS disks), so maintenance might (got to say "might"!)not be an issue.

I think the issue was the system crash caused by an MSNBC video. I did not have any problems with MSNBC until recently, maybe a month ago. Camino is my main browser, but Firefox worked fine as well until 3.5. Now all three browsers have the same problem - video loads (as shown by the progress bar), ad plays fine, main video plays about 30secs., then stutters resumes jerky and sound out of synch.

The chain of problems might (love that word!) have begun with the MSNBC video, which caused the crash, which caused the dock's plist corruption, which caused hair to be torn out and much gnashing of teeth! The MSNBC issue is for another thread, but I have run my browsers with default settings (no optional add-ons, plug-ins except what is necessary) and still have the video problems.

My defaulting dock issue is resolved now I hope, but the cause is unclear. After years with Macs from the early PPC days, I'm beginning to feel weary. Afterall, if you drive a car, you don't need to be a mechanic, but it seems not quite so with computers yet.

Dock has been replaced by the "default" version.
