Loose Hard Drive?

I just had my seven month old unibody MBP replaced due to case warpage. The new machine is great but I noticed that my hard drive shakes around a bit in its enclosure. I checked to make sure the drive was secured properly and it is. Is this normal or should I bring it in to be looked at?

I cant tell you how fed up I'm beginning to get with this machine and Apple's quality control. I've had nothing but problems with the Unibody MBP. When the machine first came out I had to have it replaced twice due to bad hardware, then there was case warpage on my past machine, now this. I cant get a machine that doesn't have some sort of issue. I don't want this machine replaced now because I'm afraid there will be an even bigger issue with the next machine.

The problem you seem to be having sounds like it should be a fairly minor fix. Provided you're happy with the rest of the machine... as you seem to be... I would expect they could just fix the loose drive problem for you.

I would definatly rather keep this machine, everything else is pretty much flawless. I just hope it's an in and out fix. It's becoming a real hastle haveing to go to the apple store every week and I really can't be without my computer for another few days... Does anyone posibly know what would cause the hard drive to be loose like this? And is this a common fix?

I recently replaced my standard issue 5400rpm 320gb drive with the Seagate 7200.3 Momentus 320gb drive. It is slightly thinner in form factor than the Hitachi I replaced. Because of this the hard tends to rattle a little bit in the aluminum chassis. You could check the hard drive mounting next to the battery to ensure that it is fastened securely.

I've placed a thin piece of ESD rubber between the bottom of the aluminum chassis and the Seagate drive. It doesn't rattle anymore.

The drive height is not what governs the drive fitment. It's the mounting screws on the sides of the drive that secure it to the bay.

Excerpt from page 40 of the Macbook Pro, User's Manual. (The page also contains an illustration.)

"Important: There are four (4) mounting screws on the sides of your hard disk drive.
If your replacement drive doesn’t include these mounting screws, remove the ones
from your old drive and mount them on the replacement drive before you install it."

Hi Meaprs86,

I studied the hard drive fitment in my MBP, looking for movement after it was secured "properly"; per the manual, etc, etc....

After I secured the screw, holding the bracket, I pulled up and down on the tape-tab-pull on the drive and did find some play. Maybe a mm or less even.

It appears to only be on the bracket-side of my HD compartment, but it does wiggle up and down.

Perhaps there is considerably more movement, at the same location, in your unit, as I'm not sure this is what you are trying to describe.

I placed two tiny pieces of rubber at the bottom of each of the, orange, seats where the screws lay upon, replaced the bracket and checked for movement; seemed nice and tight (not overly tight, as to force the screw), no movement now.

The 7200.4 drive, seems to have settled down a bit (but, very possible my imagination) and the vibration I sense against my hand, resting on the top, is less. I would say, less intense?

So, I'm not sure if you are describing the same thing, seems yours is more intense, but I thought I'd check it out and let you know what I could find in my unit.

Perhaps, a set of those tiny rubber-bands for teeth braces wold work better than the solution I had at hand? Though, those might even be too big.
